Job summary

Courier Newsroom is seeking a freelance reporter to produce original political reporting for the Colorado newsroom, Courier Colorado, on a story-by-story basis. The freelancer will deliver up to six Colorado-focused stories per month, connecting federal, state, and local policy decisions to the real lives of residents, advancing COURIER’s pro-democracy coverage goals.

Qualifications

• Lives in Colorado
• 3+ years of reporting experience in politics, policy, or public affairs (state and local experience strongly preferred)
• Demonstrated ability to consistently report, write, and file well-researched, thoroughly reported stories.
• Strong reporting and writing skills, including sourcing, interviewing, research, and fact-checking, with a commitment to COURIER’s journalistic standards and style
• Deep familiarity with Colorado’s politics, institutions, and key issues
• Alignment with COURIER’s mission to provide fact-based, people-centered reporting that strengthens civic participation and democracy

• Deliver up to 6 stories per month focused on Colorado politics, policy, and civic life, with a clear emphasis on how these issues affect everyday people, as assigned.
• Refine angles, incorporate feedback, and ensure all reporting meets COURIER’s journalistic standards and style.
• Conduct rigorous research, interviews, and fact-checking, including outreach to impacted community members, subject-matter experts, and key political actors.

Consultancy Overview

The freelancer will produce original political reporting for our Colorado newsroom, Courier Colorado on a story-by-story basis.

The reporter will deliver stories that connect federal, state, and local policy decisions to the real lives of Colorado residents, advancing COURIER’s pro-democracy coverage goals.

Deliverables: Up to 6 stories per month focused on Colorado politics, policy, and civic life, with a clear emphasis on how these issues affect everyday people, as assigned. To produce these deliverables, you will be expected to:

• Refine angles, incorporate feedback, and ensure all reporting meets COURIER’s journalistic standards and style.
• Conduct rigorous research, interviews, and fact-checking, including outreach to impacted community members, subject-matter experts, and key political actors.

Payment:

$500 a story for stories between 500-700 words
