Job summary

Coda Octopus Colmek, Inc. designs, manufactures and supports advanced marine systems in Salt Lake City.

We seek an experienced FPGA Design Engineer to design, verify and implement FPGA firmware for real-time signal processing on sonar, navigation and sensing systems. The role requires 5+ years of FPGA firmware experience, strong SystemVerilog/VHDL skills, and tool proficiency across Intel/Altera and AMD/Xilinx platforms.

Qualifications

  • Minimum 5 years' FPGA firmware design experience.
  • Degree in Electronics Engineering, Mathematics, Physics, Computer Engineering or related discipline.
  • SystemVerilog and/or VHDL development; FPGA tool experience with Intel/Altera or AMD/Xilinx.
  • Strong hardware debugging, verification and problem-solving skills.
  • DSP experience including beamforming and real-time signal processing; underwater acoustics applications.

Responsibilities

  • Develop FPGA firmware for new products and enhancements.
  • Define firmware requirements and architectures.
  • Design and implement interfaces (I2C, SPI, UART, high-speed serial).
  • Develop and optimize FPGA-based DSP and beamforming functions.
  • Verifiy, integrate and test hardware; collaborate with designers.
  • Maintain design documentation and participate in reviews.
  • Maintain version/release control per ISO 9001.
  • Develop diagnostic/test tools using MATLAB, Python or TCL.
  • Contribute ideas for future product development.

Job description

Coda Octopus designs, manufactures and supports advanced systems and software for the marine survey, construction, defense and security sectors. Our technologies include real-time 3D sonar systems, augmented reality diving systems, inertial navigation systems, GNSS positioning solutions, other high-performance underwater technologies, and rugged military electronics and processing systems used worldwide.

We are seeking an experienced FPGA Design Engineer to join our Salt Lake City based engineering team on a full-time basis.This person would work on defense projects and systems as part of the Salt Lake City team as well as 3D sonar systems and other underwater technologies as part of the larger Coda Octopus group.

The Role

You will play a key role in the design, verification and implementation of FPGA firmware and real-time signal processing solutions for new and existing products. Working within a multidisciplinary engineering team, you will contribute to the development of advanced sonar, navigation, communication, and sensing systems, including FPGA, DSP and GPU-accelerated (CUDA) processing technologies.

The successful candidate will be degree qualified (or equivalent) and have a minimum of five years' experience in FPGA firmware development. You will possess strong digital design, verification and hardware debugging skills, together with excellent problem-solving abilities, creativity, integrity and a genuine enthusiasm for technology and learning.

  • Degree in Electronics Engineering, Mathematics, Physics, Computer Engineering or a related discipline (or equivalent experience)
  • Minimum 5 years' FPGA firmware design experience
  • Digital systems design and integration
  • SystemVerilog and/or VHDL development
  • Intel/Altera and/or AMD/Xilinx development tool experience
  • Hardware debugging and fault investigation
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary development team
  • Digital signal processing (DSP), including beamforming and real-time signal processing applications
  • Sonar, radar, communications, defense or underwater acoustics applications
  • Embedded microcontroller firmware development
  • Embedded software development
  • Verification frameworks such as OSVVM
Key Responsibilities
  • Develop FPGA firmware for new products and enhancements to existing products
  • Define firmware requirements and architectures
  • Design and implement digital communication interfaces including I²C, SPI, UART, and various high speed serial
  • Develop and optimize FPGA-based digital signal processing and beamforming functions where required
  • Undertake simulation, verification, integration and hardware testing
  • Collaborate with hardware engineers to optimize system performance and reliability
  • Investigate and resolve design issues, faults and non-conformances
  • Produce design documentation and participate in design reviews
  • Maintain version and release control in accordance with ISO 9001 quality standards
  • Develop diagnostic and test tools using MATLAB, Python or TCL
  • Contribute ideas and technologies for future product development
