Overview

Howdy! Bruce here - Chief of Staff at String. If you’re a technical storyteller who speaks the language of engineers, can move fast, and wants to write, film, and build for some of the largest enterprises in the world, I want you to join our team.

At String, we’re building the complete layer for companies to collect, structure, and receive web data. We’ve hit 7-figure ARR, are growing fast by selling to everyone, from individual devs I meet on X to some of the most powerful financial institutions on the planet ($1T+ AUM). We’ve done it all with a lean team of < 10, with only one initial funding round.

In July, we launched our Web Access API, which allows companies to fetch, search, crawl, map, and browse nearly any site on the internet.

In <2 months from launch, that product reached six figures ARR. We have a ~95%+ conversion rate from trial → purchase, and a ~95% retention rate.

I want to get it in front of more people and companies. I want you to help us do it.

This role would own our inbound sales strategy and execution for the Web Access API. I think of the job as having three responsibilities:

  • Strategize: How should we segment our prospects? What are the best places and content formats to reach them?
  • Create: Build content (YT videos, blogs, ads, tweets, demos, LI posts, etc.) that show the value of our product to enterprises who use web data to build out their core product offering
  • Engage: Meet engineers where they are (discords, subreddits, hacker news, hackathons, stackoverflow) and help them solve their scraping / antibot problems while demonstrating String’s value!

You are either a builder with a creative side or a creative with a technical side, and are excited about being online all day, talking to engineers, while creating data-driven content using one of the largest collections of web data on the planet.

What we do

Today, any business that wants to collect web data has to jump through tons of hoops:

  • Build infrastructure to send thousands of requests to websites
  • Build technology to avoid getting detected as a bot (very hard to do at scale)
  • Code individual scripts for every website they want to scrape
  • Fix all those scripts as websites change, and
  • Ensure consistent data quality across runs

We solve all of these problems so that they never have to worry about their web data pipelines. Thus, we 1) significantly improve their end products driving millions in revenue and 2) save them hundreds of thousands of dollars in engineering costs.

We cut our teeth working with hedge funds (6 of the top 10 in AUM are customers) and VC firms (names you’d recognize but I cannot disclose) and are now taking our learnings from working with them to build data solutions for every firm that needs public web data for their product.

Our end customers use our product to

  • Make better decisions. E.g., “How much is Lululemon discounting their products and should I therefore buy their stock?”
  • Fundamentally support their core products. E.g. I’m an AI legal tech company and need to scrape tons of legal codes across state & local government websites.

Building this would have been impossible before the AI revolution. We have a unique opportunity to build the first platform where anyone can collect structured data across any website with just a prompt.

What you will do
  • Write articles showing insights from the datasets that we collect (E.g., deep-dive analysis on the growth of Anduril, comparing success of Lululemon vs. Vuori, analyzing adoption of Chinese vs. US AI models)
  • Help us get to tens of thousands of followers across LinkedIn and X
  • Construct personalized demos for the companies we’re targeting
  • Engage with people asking questions about scraping and antibot on reddit, discord, etc
  • Set up a slack or discord for all of our users to connect, and run it!
  • Construct and run a paid ads program
  • Optimize funnel conversion and create custom landing pages for clients and specific ads
  • Create short and long form videos that demonstrate product capabilities, provide educational value to developers, and show life at our company!

We’re willing to bet on slope if you can demonstrate a high level of competence or hunger. We have a few must-haves, and the rest is flexible if you rock.

You do have:
  • Experience writing content (we ask for proof of this in the application)
  • An NYC home base (or the willingness to move)
  • Some data or technical experience (Python, Go, Typescript, working with APIs). This is not about expertise, but our product and buyers are technical and you must understand both deeply
You probably have:
  • 1+ years of experience building GTM systems using AI
  • 2+ years of sales or marketing experience
  • Experience selling $10k-100k ARR deals

Our application is structured in a way that allows you to demonstrate these things rather than just tell us about them. If you copy and paste AI-generated text into the application, I’ll know, and I will throw it in the slopcan :)

It isn’t often that a startup is hiring their first marketing employee after already generating 7 figures in ARR. We are in the initial stages of PMF and have by far the best product in the market (the vast majority of our customers have switched from competitors).

The bottleneck now is just getting it in front of buyers. For the right person, this will be an opportunity for immense career growth both to own responsibility beyond the typical marketing role and to move into managing a team much faster than otherwise possible.

This role will transform your career and give you the badge to go on to whatever you want to do next.

We believe you’ll have the skills to be a 10x asset to any startup you join in the future - the type of person that hot startups want to bring in as their first VP of marketing.

We’ve also structured our compensation to be higher than market rate and to include accelerants and equity to ensure we get the best talent. Other benefits include:
  • Medical, dental, and vision insurance
  • Flexible PTO
  • Free food in office - breakfast, lunch, dinner
  • NYC office - beautiful office in Chelsea, snacks, drinks, peak startup energy
  • Unlimited tokens for AI use
  • Annual international offsite (last 3 years - Marrakech, Istanbul, Kuala Lumpur - we like an adventure!)
  • Initial conversation with Bruce (30 mins)
  • Conversation with Rohit (30 mins)
  • Work exercise with Bruce (1 hour)
  • Work trial in person with full team (1 day)
Team

You should read through our team values to see if working with us will be a good fit for you. If you get excited from reading the values page, it’s likely a good fit and vice versa.

Logan (CTO): Leading engineering and has extensive web scraping & AI experience. Ships like a 10 person engineering team (Rohit bragging for him). Previously worked as the founding engineer at Nourish (YC W21, now unicorn) and as a software engineer at C3 AI. Has arbitraged Polymarket, frontran ICOs & Coinbase listings, and written a chess engine.

Rohit (CEO): Leading GTM and has signed 25+ deals including 6 of the 10 largest hedge funds while spending half his time coding. Previously worked as a consultant at Bain and cofounded two startups in college, one of them with Logan called CampusOven.

Bruce (CoS): Joined from Bain to help supercharge the ops function and grow adoption of our industry-leading Web Access product. Also worked with us during our CampusOven days.

Engineers: We have 7 more great engineers on the team who help build and maintain the full end to end product. We’re lucky to have such passionate and thoughtful engineers on the team.

Growth interns: We have two rockstar interns on the team right now who have already sourced billion-dollar companies and publicly traded enterprises, they’ll be able to help you out!

Compensation

We’re building an exceptional team and so want to be generous on compensation. Our philosophy is that base compensation is for living expenses and equity is for upside. We want you to be able to give your all and benefit proportionately from your contributions, without worrying about living expenses.

So our compensation structure is a base salary competitive with other early-stage startups and generous equity relative to other startups. We know that part of the excitement of joining a startup is the upside and to feel like an owner - that’s why we left our corporate jobs.

Concretely, that means $120-$160k salary with 0.1%-0.25% equity - we are flexible here based on desired mix of cash, equity, and commission
