Job summary

Foss Maritime is seeking an Engineer for the Long Beach team to ensure vessel machinery, equipment, and systems are operated, maintained, and repaired safely. You will be a key member of the Vessel Management Team, ensuring adherence to maintenance programs and coordinating shore-side repairs of Foss vessels and facilities.

The role requires extensive marine mechanical experience, a valid USCG credential and TWIC, and the ability to work nights, weekends, and holidays when needed.

Qualifications

  • Minimum five years mechanical experience with marine/industrial machinery.
  • Minimum two years as Marine Engineer.
  • Valid USCG Merchant Mariner Document or MMC and Medical Certificate at STCW date.
  • Valid TWIC card.
  • Willingness to work nights, weekends, and holidays.
  • Proficient with forklift and cranes.
  • Ability to read equipment manuals, drawings, charts and blueprints.
  • Basic computer skills.
  • Experience with engines, winches, motors, transmissions.
  • Welding/cutting experience preferred.

Responsibilities

As a Engineer with our Long Beach Team, the primary responsibility of this position is to ensure all vessel machinery, equipment and systems are operated, maintained and repaired in a safe and effective manner. Additionally, as a key member of the Vessel Management Team, this position is responsible for ensuring adherence to all Company operational guidelines and planned maintenance programs. This position assumes the responsibilities of performing shore side repairs of Foss vessels, shoreside equipment and facilities. The primary focus is that of effective time management, applying and maintaining safe work practices, management of hazardous and non-hazardous waste materials, proper utilization of resources, and strategic planning that lends itself to absolute minimum down-time of Foss equipment. Associated skills required are the ability to perform accurate diagnostic evaluations and service/repair recommendations. A high level of cost sensitivity and professionalism is required as the position will occasionally require serving as owner's representative. Additionally, safe operation of yard equipment and machinery is required.

What You'll Do
Vessel Maintenance and Repair
  • Perform preventative maintenance and repairs to vessels and equipment.
  • Assist in diagnostic evaluations of machinery.
  • Perform repairs on barge equipment.
Scheduling, Delegating Tasks, Overseeing of Yard
  • Assign tasks to other maintenance personnel.
  • Assume lead role in logistics to projects.
  • Must have the ability to cover vacancies on vessels on an as needed basis.
Shoreside Equipment & Facilities Maintenance & Repair
  • Maintain yard and shop equipment in accordance with Foss standards and regulatory agencies.
  • Maintain "Safe Workplace" standards up to and including reporting and correcting deficiencies.
  • Troubleshoot machinery malfunctions as required and effectively communicate directly with the Port Engineer and designated shore-side support staff and vendors.
  • Perform special duties and other projects as assigned.
  • Adhere to all company policies.
  • Accomplish all tasks as appropriately assigned or requested.
Environmental Preservation
  • Proper handling, storage, transportation, and disposal of all environmentally sensitive materials.
  • Employee shall never compromise the Foss Maritime commitment to the environment.
What We're Looking For
  • A minimum of five years of mechanical experience is required. Intimate working knowledge of the operation, care and maintenance of marine and industrial machinery.
  • A minimum of two years of experience as a Marine Engineer.
  • Must have a valid USCG Merchant Mariner Document or Merchant Mariner Credential and Medical Certificate at the STCW date.
  • Must have a valid TWIC card.
  • Must be willing to work nights, weekends, and holidays on occasion.
  • Proficient in the use of and knowledge of basic operations forklift, cranes and other portable construction.
  • Must be able to effectively communicate both in verbal and written form.
  • Must have thorough understanding of equipment operation manuals, drawings, charts, graphs, and blueprints.
  • Knowledge of welding/cutting skills preferred.
  • Must have basic computer skills and knowledge.
  • Operational theory of high-speed marine and industrial engines, both two and four cycle preferred.
  • Ability to repair and operate a wide range of machinery including engines, winches, motors, transmissions, etc.
  • Basic diagnostic and repair abilities with regard to marine subsystems such as pneumatic control systems, hydraulic systems, electrical systems, and fuel systems.
  • Proper use of hand tools and minor electric tools.
Working Conditions
  • Exposure to all weather conditions (rain, ice, snow, heat, wind, etc.).
  • Must have the ability and flexibility to work a variety of schedules and hours and must be able to report for duty with a one hour notice. Must be able to work overtime, Sundays, Saturdays, holidays, night work.
  • Must not be afraid of heights or narrow walkways.
  • Possibility of permanent positions on a schedule available.
  • Must be willing to join the Inlandboatman's union within 30 days of hire.
Compensation

Training wage starts at $35.04. Upon completion of training, pay increase is determined based on license held. Pay for this position will be $35.0400 per hour.
