Summary

You will serve as a Forestry Technician (Seasonal) and supports the resource stewardship program at Pictured Rocks by applying field equipment to monitor forest resources, managing invasive species and forest pests, and ensuring data collection. The typical season for Seasonal Staffing Office-Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore is November to May, but can be variable during these months due to weather conditions, project needs, or funding. Anticipated Entry on Duty: November 2026.

• Mapping and inventorying forest stands
• Conducting early detection and rapid response survey and chemical and/or cultural treatments of forest pests and invasive species
• Data processing and writing reports
• Planning pest treatments and forest restoration

This position does not allow substituting education for experience.

Requirements

This position will be filled under the Field Unit Local Hiring Authority. Eligibility is limited to applicants who reside within the defined local commuting area at the time of application. For this announcement, the local commuting area is the area from which individuals can reasonably commute to the duty station under normal conditions. Physical Demands: The work ranges from sedentary when completing duties in the office to frequent field work requiring a considerable amount of walking, riding, stooping, bending and lifting. Much of the time is spent in the field where exposure to extremes of heat and cold, rough terrain, insects, snakes, and other hazards are common. The work may occasionally require working at heights.
