Job description

The Forest Technician position with the Pennsylvania Game Commission in the Southeast Region offers a unique opportunity to support vital habitat projects. You will help strengthen young forest environments that support diverse wildlife across the region. This role is perfect for individuals who enjoy active, outdoor work with meaningful outcomes. This position supports forestry activities that promote young forest habitats across State Game Lands within the region. The role contributes to conservation goals through fieldwork, mapping, and data collection. As a Forest Technician, you will perform the following duties:

  • Boundary Marking: Mark boundaries for timber sales, herbicide areas, and habitat treatments following instructions from foresters
  • Timber Evaluation: Examine trees, mark timber, and complete volume computations according to forester prescriptions
  • Field Data Collection: Assist in gathering data for stand analysis, sale layout, and related forestry activities
  • GPS Mapping: Collect GPS data for management activities and produce maps for forester approval
  • Equipment Care: Maintain tools and equipment used in forest habitat management activities
  • Fire Duties: Perform assigned wildland fire responsibilities

Work Schedule and Additional Information:
  • 3 Year Limited Term, full-time employment
  • Work hours are 7:00 AM to 3:30 PM, Monday - Friday, with 30-minute lunch.
  • Telework: You will not have the option to telework in this position.
  • Salary: In some cases, the starting salary may be non‑negotiable.

QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:
  • An associate’s degree in forest technology; or
  • Completion of equivalent formal education in forestry.
  • Applicants will be considered to have met the educational requirements once they are within 3 months of graduating with a qualifying degree/credits.
Other Requirements:
  • PA residency requirement is currently waived for this title.
  • You must be able to perform essential job functions.
Legal Requirements:
  • This position falls under the provisions of the Child Protective Services Law.
    • Under the Law, a conditional offer of employment will require submission and approval of satisfactory criminal history reports including, but not limited to, PA State Police clearance, PA Child Abuse history clearance, and FBI Fingerprint clearance.
