STATE FOREST OUTDOOR RECREATIONAL PROGRAM SPECIALIST

The State Forest Unit consists of 16 state forests and 172,375 acres ranging from mountain coves in East Tennessee to bottomlands along the Mississippi River. State Forests are managed for multiple use to maintain healthy and productive forests and to provide a sustained yield of high-quality timber and other forest products. An important part of multiple use management revolves around outdoor recreation. The State Forest system has experienced a significant increase in outdoor recreation over the past few years and is looking for someone to manage this program both internally with state forest staff and externally with outdoor recreation enthusiasts.

Responsibilities
  • Nurture the collaborative relationships between natural resource agencies including state, federal and local governments as well as outdoor recreation non-profit organizations.
  • Develop and maintain an internal permitting structure for outdoor recreational requests on State Forests.
  • Prepare detailed reports for state executives and other stakeholders that describe current and possible future projects/activities.
  • Work with state forest staff to create GIS-based maps designating State Forest uses.
  • Engage outdoor recreational stakeholders and educate them on the mission of the Division of Forestry and how outdoor recreation interacts with natural resource management on State Forests.
  • Develop an outdoor recreational strategic plan for the State Forest system.
  • Work with State Forest Unit Leader to determine appropriate funding for outdoor recreational management on the State Forest system.
