  • Alternatively, a Bachelor's degree with four years of training and experience directly related to chemistry, including one year of college-level chemistry (lab).

Responsibilities

  • Examine and identify controlled substances and other evidence.
  • Identify unknown chemical compounds.
  • Interpret instrumentation charts, perform wet chemistry, extractions, thin-layer and column chromatography, and conduct chemical, biological and microscopic examinations.
  • Formulate conclusions and prepare accurate reports for law-enforcement and courts.
  • Consult with law-enforcement officials regarding examination results and testify in court.
  • Advise other employees and agencies on analysis, court testimony and report interpretation.
  • Assist or direct investigators in evidence collection, prepare reagents and other processing chemicals.
  • Perform other related duties and projects as assigned.

Overview

The Ohio Attorney General's Office is seeking a Forensic Scientist to work in the Bureau of Criminal Investigation (BCI) Chemistry unit at either the Richfield or London Laboratory.

BCI is the state's official crime lab and provides expert investigative services to law enforcement agencies. The laboratory operates 24/7 and offers in‑person and remote assistance at no cost to requesting agencies.

Responsibilities
  • Examine and identify controlled substances and other evidence.
  • Identify unknown chemical compounds.
  • Interpret instrumentation charts, perform wet chemistry, extractions, thin‑layer and column chromatography, and conduct chemical, biological and microscopic examinations.
  • Formulate conclusions and prepare accurate reports for law‑enforcement and courts.
  • Consult with law‑enforcement officials regarding examination results and testify in court.
  • Advise other employees and agencies on analysis, court testimony and report interpretation.
  • Assist or direct investigators in evidence collection, prepare reagents and other processing chemicals.
  • Perform other related duties and projects as assigned.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in a directly related science (chemistry, biology, forensic science, physics, health science, medical technology, etc.) that meets the laboratory's accrediting body requirements.
  • Completion of coursework in Organic Chemistry 1 (lab), Organic Chemistry 2 (lab) and Analytical Chemistry (lab).
  • Alternatively, a Bachelor’s degree with four years of training and experience directly related to chemistry, including one year of college‑level chemistry (ten semester hours plus lab).

Working Conditions

Unusual conditions may include exposure to caustic chemicals, explosives, odors, firearms, drugs, decomposing tissue, physiological fluids, contagious diseases, and overnight travel.
