Job summary

WJE Austin is seeking an experienced Petrographer to join our team and apply a principles-first approach to determine root causes of problems in cementitious materials used in the built environment.

The role involves petrographic analyses, microscopy, data recording, and collaboration with engineers and architects on complex investigations from historic preservation to new construction challenges. A strong background in geology or materials science is required.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree or higher in geology, materials science/engineering, geological engineering, or a related field with substantial coursework in mineralogy, petrology, and geochemistry; advanced degree preferred
• Minimum two years of applied petrographic laboratory experience; industry experience preferred to academic experience
• Strong foundation in optical mineralogy, petrology, and petrographic sample preparation using microscopy and section analysis
• Excellent technical, written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills
• Ability to prioritize tasks and adapt to changing demands in a fast-paced environment

Responsibilities

• Contribute to day-to-day success of multiple projects with limited oversight under guidance of experienced petrographers
• Perform hands-on petrographic analyses, microscopy, field assessment, and physical testing such as compressive strength and durability
• Accurately record and organize data for analysis and assess reasonableness of results
• Help with laboratory safety, maintenance, and quality assurance including instruments, glassware, and supplies
