Job summary

Mecklenburg County Government seeks a certified forensic pathologist to perform autopsies, prepare reports, and testify in court. Responsibilities include maintaining records, interpreting lab results, and coordinating with law enforcement.

Qualifications

• Medical degree and forensic pathology training from an accredited school.
• Active license to practice medicine in NC or eligible within required timeframe.
• Board certification by American Board of Pathology in Anatomic Pathology/Forensic Pathology (or board exam within 2 years).

Responsibilities

• Perform autopsies and physical examinations to determine cause and manner of death.
• Prepare clear narrative descriptions of autopsy findings.
• Maintain medical examiner records and chain of custody for decedents’ effects and evidence.
• Interpret histological, toxicological, chemical, hematological and microbiological results.
• Testify in deposition and court, presenting findings clearly.
• Coordinate with criminal justice system, funeral directors and staff.
• Participate in policy development for handling infectious cases and hazardous materials.
• Evaluate facilities/equipment to meet operational standards.
• Provide information to public in line with policy.
