Job summary

Kokosing, Inc. is seeking Utility Foremen for projects in the Northern VA/DC/MD area.

Job Title

Utility Foremen for projects in the Northern VA/DC/MD area.

Job Summary

Supervises and coordinates activities of workers engaged in the construction, installation, and repair of roadways and utilities (earthwork/grading).

Key Responsibilities
  1. Reviews documents and plans, ensuring all questions are answered before proceeding with any activities.
  2. Examines blueprints, plans and profiles to determine dimensions of structure.
  3. Directs and trains crew in performing work as shown on contract drawings and specifications within the production budget of job estimate.
  4. Acts as OSHA defined "competent person" on job.
  5. Selects materials to ensure conformance with provisions of Project.
  6. Plans ahead to ensure that appropriate materials are on hand when needed.
  7. With Superintendent and Project Engineer, plans sequence of activities on the Project in two‑week schedule planning.
  8. Assigns workers to tasks such as operating machinery and equipment, installing trench boxes, installing pipes, etc.
  9. Inspects work performed by subcontractors to ensure conformance with specifications.
  10. Supervises workers engaged in utility installations and grading for roadwork.
  11. Studies production schedules and estimates worker hour requirements for completion of job assignment.
  12. Knows crew members by name and maintains a contact list.
  13. Conducts daily "huddle" with crew, explaining in detail the work to be accomplished and how it is to be accomplished; trains inexperienced crew members.
  14. Interprets company policies to workers and enforces disciplinary procedures when dealing with employee problems.
  15. Evaluates ongoing safety issues on job and makes changes where necessary.
  16. Enforces safety regulations and use of personal protective equipment.
  17. Establishes or adjusts work procedures to meet production schedules.
  18. Recommends measures to improve production methods, equipment performance, and quality of product.
  19. Suggests changes in working conditions and use of equipment to increase efficiency of work crew.
  20. Analyzes and resolves work problems or assists workers in solving work problems.
  21. Initiates or suggests plans to motivate workers to achieve work goals.
  22. Maintains time and production records: detailed and accurate time sheets, with verified quantities included and detailed locations of work performed.
  23. Ensures time sheets are turned in on time.
  24. Keeps job team informed of progress and problems.
  25. Estimates, requisitions, and inspects materials.
  26. Sets up machines and equipment and supervises use.
  27. Maintains a detailed daily job diary.
  28. Holds a meaningful weekly safety meeting for crew and files report on attendance and content.
  29. Performs activities of workers supervised.
  30. Minimizes punch list; finishes work activities.
Supervisory Responsibilities

Responsible for the overall direction, coordination, and evaluation of this crew. May manage one lead person who supervises a total of two to three employees and directly supervise three to five non‑supervisory employees. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization’s policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

Qualifications
  • Five years related experience and/or training.
  • Experience with water/storm/sewer pipe installation, grading for roadways, etc.
Language Skills

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of the organization.

Mathematical Skills

Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent.

Reasoning Ability

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

Expected base hourly range for this position is: $40/hr – $50/hr.
