Summary
The Foreman I, under the general supervision of the Operations Manager, works as a technician in a leadership capacity, directs and optimizes technical staff operations for the maintenance and repair of city vehicle and equipment. Serves as departmental liaison, coordinates warranty/sublet work and oversees personnel actions.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Leads, guides and develops and a crew of up to eight technicians in automotive and equipment repairs; ensures proper diagnosis, servicing, and repair of mechanical defects in equipment used for construction, ground maintenance, and automotive applications
- Serves as the primary customer service representative for the assigned shop, coordinates with departments
- Oversees equipment maintenance and repair procedures, provides guidance on modifications and replacements
- Diagnoses mechanical issues and performs complex repairs on city cars, trucks, and heavy equipment alongside the team
- Ensures the accuracy and completion of equipment inspections, reviews recommended parts, and orders parts and supplies for work orders as required
- Coordinates external warranty and vendor repair work
- Reviews of work orders, consumption reports, and demand forecasts to estimate peak delivery periods and issues work assignments to ensure targeted productivity goals and standards are met or exceeded
- Performs quality-control inspections of completed repairs; ensures safety and suitability before returning vehicles to service
- Drives continuous improvement initiatives to optimize shop operations, reduce turnaround times, and enhance customer service quality
- Ensures technicians complete required training and maintain professional certifications and compliance
- Inspects and audits operational areas for strict adherence to safety standards and guidelines
- Oversees work order system, including opening, closing, and updating electronic record systems
- Trains technicians in preventative maintenance and intermediate repairs across a diverse range of vehicles and equipment
- Evaluates assigned technicians’ performance; provides recommendations to Operations Manager for hiring, discipline, and termination
- Monitors expenditures to ensure alignment with approved department budgets
- Serves as 24-hour primary on-call personnel as part of an emergency rotation
- Follows City policies, procedures, and safety guidelines
- Performs other duties as assigned
Minimum Qualifications
- High School diploma or equivalent
- Three (3) years of experience in maintenance and repair of automotive, small equipment, trucks up to Class 8, diesel engines, and/or mechanical shop equipment
- Demonstrated leadership skills
- Must furnish own hand tools and toolbox
Certification and License Requirements
- Valid driver’s license
- EPA Section 609 Certification
Preferred Qualifications
- Master ASE
- Emergency Vehicle (EVT) Certifications
- Experience in a shop supervisory role
- CNG Technician Certification
- CNG Inspector Certification
