The Tacoma Rescue Mission (TRM) is a faith-based nonprofit organization whose mission is to support all people - including clients, volunteers, community partners, and staff - to become their best. We provide emergency services such as shelter and meals to neighbors experiencing homelessness. We offer supportive housing and addiction recovery programs that promote self-sufficiency, sustainable transformation, and stability. Job Purpose

Prepares and serves a variety of nutritious meals; supervises and works with the program participants in support of preparing and serving meals to incoming guests.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities
  • Treats customers with dignity and respect.
  • Prepares, cooks, and serves a variety of foods.
  • Tracks meal counts, intern timecards, and community service hours.
  • Performs orientation for interns and volunteers.
  • Supervises program participants, volunteers, and interns in a limited food preparation assignment and creates mutually beneficial experiences.
  • Receives and stores food and supplies.
  • Uses good general housekeeping techniques.
  • Cleans and sanitizes all food service equipment on a daily basis.
  • Cleans and sanitizes freezers and refrigerators as needed.
  • Cleans work areas, floors, windows, walls, storage rooms, and receiving areas weekly.
  • Performs preventative maintenance on kitchen equipment.
  • Embodies the values that form our culture to meet the organization’s mission of sharing God’s love, hope, and support with our neighbors in need to uplift communities.
  • Performs other duties as assigned to support others and ensure an efficient and effective work environment.

Works well under pressure, able to respond calmly and effectively when under stress, and interacts with people from diverse backgrounds.

Tuesday-Saturday 5am-1:30pm

*Initial training schedule will be Monday-Friday, 5am-1:30pm.

Requirements
  • Two years’ experience in institutional cooking, preferred.
  • Basic knowledge of institutional food service cookery, equipment, safety, sanitation, and food preparation.
  • Operates equipment, tools and machinery with skill and dexterity.
  • Ability to understand and follow directions and procedures.
  • Works well in stressful situations and maintains calm demeanor under pressure.
  • Ability to prevent or resolve conflict.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships and foster teamwork in a diverse environment using effective and thoughtful interactions and communication.
  • Basic computer, data entry, math, and grammar skills.
  • Skilled in clear and effective written, verbal, and electronic communication.
  • Ability to work with a diverse population with high barriers.
Certifications & Licensures

ServSafe Certification and Food Handler’s Card, preferred.

Physical Requirements
  • Frequently moves about the office and kitchen facilities to access equipment, machinery, and food as needed.
  • Occasionally moves to respond to urgent situations.
  • Frequently operates office and kitchen equipment and machinery.
  • Communicates information and ideas so others will understand. Exchanges accurate information in these situations.
  • Observes details at close range (within a few feet of the observer).
  • Frequently moves boxes weighing up to 50 pounds across the kitchen areas for various needs.
  • Occasionally works in outdoor weather conditions.
  • Wears proper PPE (personal protective equipment) when necessary for exposure control.

    • Hiring Salary Range: $21.44 - $23.57
    • Full Salary Range: $21.44 - $25.92
