Job description

This Food Service Worker position is located within the Nutrition & Food Service at the VA Medical Center in James J. Peters VAMC.

This position independently performs duties requiring proficiency in special procedures and broad knowledge of service operations, such as food and beverage preparation, modified diets, computer proficiency, dishwashing, dry and refrigerated storage, and safety and sanitation.

Duties

Major duties and responsibilities include (but are not limited to):

1. Sets up and breaks down assigned station with the correct supplies and food items.
2. Portions food items into standard serving sizes using proper utensils and dishware.
3. Decides what food items to serve for common diets when the diet card or tray ticket specifies only the diet type.
4. Provides patients with basic information about modified diets and available nutrition services.
5. Identifies discrepancies between prescribed diets and menu-designated food items.
6. Assembles, measures, weighs, or mixes ingredients for basic formulas and supplemental feedings following recipes and sanitary techniques.
7. Delivers meal trays to patients' bedsides; reports comments and complaints to supervisor or dietitian.
8. Assists cooks with food preparation, including assembling, labeling, and arranging recipe items.
9. Prepares fresh fruit, salads, dressings, sandwich fillings, cold sandwiches, desserts, nourishments, and beverages for patients.
10. Checks diet trays assembled by lower-grade workers for completeness and temperature.
11. Works in kitchen areas such as food prep, dishwashing, storage, receiving, and serving line.
12. Performs heavy-duty cleaning tasks throughout food service areas.
13. Performs other duties as assigned.

Work Schedule: 3:30 pm - 7:30 pm with rotating days off, including weekends and holidays.

Physical Effort and Work Conditions: Work is performed in kitchens with high temperatures and humidity from cooking and dishwashing. Workers are exposed to hot liquids, blades, surfaces, and temperature changes. Work requires light to moderate effort, with occasional heavy work such as scrubbing large utensils and pushing carts. Continuous standing, walking, and frequent stooping, reaching, pushing, pulling, and bending are required. Lifting objects up to 20 pounds unassisted, and occasionally over 40 pounds with assistance.
