Job summary

Porter-Leath in Memphis, TN seeks a Food Service Worker to provide nutritious home-style meals for children/youth under the supervision of the Food & Nutrition Supervisor. You will maintain the kitchen, manage inventory, and help coordinate day-to-day kitchen operations, following USDA CACFP and local health guidelines.

Responsibilities include meal preparation per menu and dietary needs, ordering supplies within budget, and collaborating with staff to ensure a safe, positive dining environment.

Qualifications

  • HS diploma or GED is required.
  • Minimum of two years of school-based or HS cooking experience required.
  • Must have working knowledge of USDA Child Food Program.
  • Must have a working knowledge of Food Safety.
  • Proficient computer experience in kitchen operations.

Responsibilities

  • Performs duties in alignment with Head Start, NAEYC, CACFP, USDA, Tennessee licensing and Porter-Leath standards.
  • Prepares and serves meals according to menu, dietary needs and number of people to be served.
  • Maintains and updates inventory of all food supplies and equipment.
  • Completes food and kitchen supply ordering within budget and timelines.
  • Reports kitchen information to supervising bodies.
  • Maintains hygiene and cleanliness of kitchen and storage areas.
  • Keeps logs and documentation for researchability.
  • Keeps supervisor informed of programmatic issues.
  • Works with staff to create a positive, enriching, and safe environment for children, families, and staff.
  • Completes monthly reporting to appropriate authorities.
  • Participates in student education by collaborating with teachers.

Under the direction of the Food & Nutrition Supervisor, the Food Service Worker is responsible for providing our children/youth with nutritious home-style meals, maintaining the kitchen, handling inventory, and may be responsible for coordinating the day-to-day operations of the kitchen.

Qualifications
  • HSD or GED is required.
  • Minimum of two years of school based or HS cooking experience is required.
Supervisory Responsibilities

This position does not include any supervisory responsibilities.

Essential Job Functions
  1. Performs according to the standards set forth by Head Start, NAEYC, CACFP, USDA, Tennessee Day Care Licensing and Porter-Leath while performing duties within the kitchen and the center.
  2. Prepares and serves meals in quantities according to menu, special dietary needs, and number of persons to be served in accordance with USDA recommended daily dietary allowances.
  3. Maintains and regularly updates inventory of all food supplies and equipment.
  4. Completes food and kitchen supply ordering in a timely manner taking into account the program budget, timelines, and needs.
  5. Reports kitchen information and issues to various supervising bodies.
  6. Complies with all health department and Porter-Leath requirements regarding food preparation, food storage and cleanliness.
  7. Maintains cleanliness of kitchen area by washing dishes, cleaning counters and equipment, sweeping and mopping, and other tasks.
  8. Maintains logs, receipts and documentation so that information is maintained and readily researchable.
  9. Keeps Supervisor informed of programmatic issues in a timely and concise manner.
  10. Works cooperatively with other staff to create a positive, enriching and safe environment for children, families and staff.
  11. Completes monthly reporting to the appropriate authorities.
  12. Participate in the education of our students by collaborating with teachers and other members of the staff
  13. Contributes to team effort by performing other duties as assigned.
Requirements
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Proficient computer experience.
  • Must have working knowledge of USDA Child Food Program.
  • Must have a working knowledge of Food Safety.
Physical Demands

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to remain stationary as well as move about the work environment. The employee must be able to manipulate and use materials as well as position objects weighing up to 50 pounds. The employee must be able to distinguish colors and see up-close. The employee will work in a non-smoking environment.

Special Conditions

This position requires a valid driver's license, a personal vehicle to travel locally to various sites, good driving record with appropriate level of automobile insurance.
