Job description

PURPOSE OF POSITION

Under the general direction of the Food Services Director, the Food Service Worker provides a wide range of duties involving the preparation and serving of foods and beverages at least three times a day to students in an educational boarding school setting.

QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS
  • A High School diploma is required.
  • At least two years' experience in food services including supervised food preparation.
  • Organized, self-motivated, efficient, independent and flexible.
  • Ability to lift and manipulate heavy objects.
  • Ability to read and write.
  • Evidence of an understanding of Navajo Culture; Ability to speak Navajo preferred.
  • Knowledgeable in food safety.
  • A valid driver's license with a safe driving record.

New employees in this position must provide documentation of immunity or immunization against tetanus, diphtheria, and measles/rubella, and of tuberculosis status by skin test or X-ray within thirty (30) days of hiring, and at such additional intervals as may be determined by the immediate supervisor.

Navajo/Indian Preference:

Consideration for employment will be given to Navajo, American Indian or Alaskan Tribal member with the required documentation including the necessary qualifications to meet the minimum requirements of the position. The Navajo/Indian preference law shall apply in all aspects of the position.

CLASSIFICATION

This position is hourly: non-exempt.

Note: Notwithstanding the above, this position is subject to possible, furlough, or reduction in force under NPS, Inc. Personnel Policies, due to unforeseen reductions in program funding that requires such general program changes.

SUPERVISOR

Primary: Food Service Manager

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Implement food safety standards to effectively carry out the food services program.
  • Follows prescribed menus in setting up hot and cold food lines; chooses proper utensils and sets steam line to appropriate temperature for menu items; checks food temperatures and prepares service areas prior to service; may operate service area cooking equipment independently, as assigned.
  • Cleans and maintain work areas; facilities, utensils, and equipment including floors; collects and places garbage and trash in designated containers.
  • Washes pots, pans, and other service ware ensuring sanitary handling; organizes and replaces service ware to appropriate location.
  • Attends to day-to-day problems and needs concerning equipment and food supplies; detects and ensures disposition of spoiled or unattractive food, defective supplies/equipment, and/or other unusual conditions.
  • Knowledge of food preparation and presentation methods, techniques, and quality standards.
  • Maintain a safe and clean environment in all food service areas with appropriate sanitation and safety levels.
  • Replenishes foods, silverware, dishes, and trays at serving stations; orders and replenishes condiments.
  • Coordinate meal schedule with all programs, retreats, banquets, and special occasion.
  • Participate in the preparation and serving of meals and food items.
  • Plan meals which are healthy, appealing, fresh, diverse, and age-appropriate.
  • Give preference to homemade and "from scratch" cooking whenever possible.
  • Monitor preparation amounts, serving portions, and leftovers in order to provide adequate portions to student, staff, faculty, and guests while minimizing waste.
  • Provides guidance and training to other food service staff performing related work.
  • Skill in cooking and preparing a variety of foods.
  • Ability to read recipes, proportion amounts and standard measurements.
  • Must have knowledge and understanding of nutrition.
  • Convey a professional and courteous manner in addressing students, staff, faculty, parents, and the community.
  • Ability to understand and follow safety procedures.
  • Maintain a safe and clean environment in all food service areas with appropriate sanitation and safety levels.
  • Be a positive role-model which reflects the food service efficiency and quality of service.
  • Performs other manual duties as assigned by the Food Service Manager.
  • Supports and efficiently carries out responsibilities in accordance with Navajo Preparatory School, Inc. (NPS) Policies and Procedures.
  • Represents NPS in a manner reflecting professionalism, and which enhances community understanding of the program.
  • Ensures compliance with all Navajo Preparatory School, Inc. policies and procedures and State of New Mexico law and regulations.
EVALUATION

Will be evaluated in accordance with the Navajo Preparatory School Board, Inc. policies and procedures.
