SUMMARY: Under direct supervision of the Food Service Manager, this position works to serve the students and staff of Valdez City Schools with attractive and nutritious meals in an atmosphere of efficiency, cleanliness, and friendliness. In addition to performing a variety of tasks preparing and serving breakfasts and lunches for their assigned building, this position is also responsible for receiving, recording, warehousing, and distributing inventory accurately.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • 1. Conduct a weekly inventory of all food and supplies.
  • 2. Pick up and deliver food and supplies as needed.
  • 3. Deliver food transport carts and food products as needed.
  • 4. Assure security of the food service storeroom and main inventory.
  • 5. Receive, verify, and store incoming shipments.
  • 6. Stock and rotate inventory.
  • 7. Notifies the Food Service Manager of discrepancies in orders received.
  • 8. Ensures the cleanliness and functional operation of galley equipment, kitchen appliances, and work areas by routinely cleaning and inspecting each piece.
  • 9. Assists Food Service Manager by performing such duties as baking, vegetable/salad preparation, meat cutting, etc.
  • 10. Serves students and staff from the cafeteria counter.
  • 11. May assist in operating the point of sale system as a cashier.
  • 12. Maintains records, deposits, reports, and filing of documents.
  • 13. Removes used dishes and assists in the cleaning and sanitation of dishes, counters, tables, and equipment as directed.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY

This position assists with the preparation and serving of meals. In addition, the occupant of this position may be called upon to help train new employees.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

This job operates indoors in a kitchen environment. This role routinely uses a variety of equipment in the production of school breakfasts and lunches. The occupant of this position may be required to work in different school buildings depending on need.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Ability to occasionally lift, carry, push, or pull up to 70 pounds with assistance. Additional physical abilities include lifting/carrying/pushing/pulling, stooping/crouching, reaching overhead/handling, repetitive use of hands, speaking, hearing conversations, and near/far visual acuity, depth perception, and field of vision.

POSITION TYPE AND EXPECTED HOURS OF WORK

This is a full-time position, with benefits. Days and hours of work are Monday through Friday, 7-8 hours/day. This position operates for 180 days out of the year. Salary Grade Level C

TRAVEL

Travel is not expected for this position.

REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
  • 1. High school diploma or equivalent.
  • 2. Current food handler's card.
  • 3. Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • 4. Hold and maintain a valid State of Alaska driver's license.
PREFERRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
  • 1. Previous warehouse handling experience.
  • 2. Experience working in food service production.
ADDITIONAL ELIGIBILITY QUALIFICATIONS

The successful candidate will be required to present a valid criminal background check upon hire.
