Job summary

USDA Food Safety and Inspection Service seeks a Consumer Safety Inspector to inspect meat, poultry, fish, eggs and other ingestible products in Chicago District plants. You will perform sampling, apply safety standards, and report findings in a hazardous environment.

Duties include independent work at higher levels, documenting results, and collaborating with plant personnel to ensure compliance with federal regulations.

Qualifications

• Specialized experience in properties and characteristics of regulated food commodities or other products for human consumption.
• Experience as consumer safety inspector, inspection aide, food inspector, public health inspector, quality inspection specialist, or similar role with sampling, quality control and sanitation.
• GS-05: 52 weeks of qualifying experience related to meat, poultry, fish, eggs, or other ingestible substances.
• GS-07: at least 52 weeks of specialized experience at independent level alongside GS-05 duties.
• GS-08: experience with the Federal Meat, Poultry, and Egg Products Inspection Acts, HACCP/SSOP, and basic statistics.
• GS-09: independent level duties; may include recommending refusals of exports and coverage at other locations.

Responsibilities

• Perform sampling, testing and inspections to ensure conformance with safety standards.
• Communicate findings and write reports on product safety and production environment.
• Work in hazardous environments within food processing plants as part of the Consumer Safety Inspector role.
