Job summary

UCHealth in Colorado Springs is seeking a Registered Nurse with Forensic Nurse Examiner credentials to perform sexual assault examinations and provide related patient care and referrals. This is an on-site, night-shift position requiring acute care experience.

You will collect histories, preserve evidence, coordinate with law enforcement, and support victims through medical and advocacy services. A valid RN license and SANE training within 3 months are required, along with BLS credentials.

Qualifications

  • RN licensed in good standing with state board.
  • 1+ year RN experience in acute care/hospital setting preferred.
  • Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner training within 3 months of hire.
  • BLS certification through AHA or Red Cross, valid through 60 days after hire.

Responsibilities

  • Take medical history and assault account from patient.
  • Assess psychological condition and perform physical exam.
  • Collect and preserve evidence, collect relevant specimens, document findings.
  • Provide nursing care for injuries and prophylactic meds; refer for further treatment as needed.
  • Communicate with victims/families regarding evidence collection, treatment, and reporting; provide advocacy and potential testimony.

Department: MHC Forensic Nurse Examiners

Work Schedule: Full Time, 0.00 hours per pay period (2 weeks)

Shift: Nights

Pay: $37.06 - $57.44 / hour. Pay is dependent on applicant's relevant experience

This position is an onsite role and does not offer a hybrid or remote option

Summary

Performs forensic examinations of individuals who have been sexually assaulted or otherwise impacted by violence and provides related patient care and referrals.

Responsibilities

Takes a medical history and account of the assault from the patient. Assesses the patient's psychological condition and performs physical examination.

Collects and preserves all evidence, collects relevant specimens, and documents findings.

Provides direct nursing care of injuries and prophylactic medications. Refers to appropriate personnel/facility for further treatment as necessary.

Communicates with victims and their families regarding evidence collection, treatment recommendations and reporting to law enforcement (except in cases of mandated reporting) in a manner that promotes informed decisions. Provides victim advocacy and/or expert testimony in court trials.

Within scope of job, requires critical thinking skills, decisive judgement and the ability to work with minimal supervision. Must be able to work in a fast-paced environment and take appropriate action.

Requirements
  • Registered Nurse
  • Graduate of an accredited or state board of nursing approved Registered/Professional Nursing program and completion of Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner training within 3 months of hire.
    State licensure as a Registered Nurse (RN).
    1 year of RN experience or 6 months of experience as an Advanced Practice Nurse (Nurse Practitioner or Certified Nurse Midwife).
  • BLS through the American Heart Association or the American Red Cross CPR for the Professional Rescuer with card in-hand before start date. BLS or CPR card must be good through sixty days of hire.
