Job description

At Blue Origin, we envision millions of people living and working in space for the benefit of Earth. We’re working to develop reusable, safe, and low-cost space vehicles and systems within a culture of safety, collaboration, and inclusion. Join our team of problem solvers as we add new chapters to the history of spaceflight! This role supports the development and operations of New Glenn, a single-configuration, heavy-lift orbital launch vehicle capable of routinely carrying people and payloads to low-Earth orbit, geostationary transfer orbit, cislunar, and beyond. Its first stage is fully reusable, and the vehicle was designed from the beginning to be human-capable. This role is a part of the Lunar Customer Programs team for the New Glenn Advanced Customer Programs. As part of the New Glenn business unit, this team develops unique solutions for New Glenn’s government, Lunar, Orbital Reef, and crewed spacecraft customers among others.

Responsibilities
  • Design fluid component hardware to meet cost, performance, and schedule constraints with guidance from senior engineers.
  • Design and route fluid subsystems (i.e., pressurization, pneumatics, coolant, propellant utilization).
  • Work with fluid components (i.e., solenoid valves, pneumatic valves, regulators, pressure vessels and instrumentation).
  • Execute research, configuration development, and trade studies to meet performance, schedule, and cost targets.
  • Create CAD models, piping and instrumentation diagrams (P&ID), detail part drawings, assemblies, installations, and interface control documents.
  • Perform Finite Element Analysis (FEA).
  • Perform fluid system modeling and analysis.
  • Create test plans, specifications, and other documentation for the development and production of flight hardware.
  • Subsystem test planning, execution, data reduction and analysis, and test data review.
  • Apply documented, repeatable processes to customer solutions.
  • Proactively engage with manufacturing and have regular floor presence during critical build phases.
  • Identify and elevate design or manufacturing issues immediately.
  • Contribute to visual project status indicators (activity schedule, budget and technical status) for team transparency.
  • Work with multi-functional teams that are responsible for selecting materials, manufacturing processes, and suppliers to produce world-class aerospace hardware.
  • Support team in meeting customer-driven schedules.
  • Support multiple concurrent projects with sustainable pace.
Minimum Qualifications
  • B.S. degree in Mechanical, Aerospace, or related field
  • 2+ years of experience in an aerospace propulsion or fluid subject area
  • Experience with 3D CAD programs Creo (Preferred), CATIA V5, SolidWorks, AutoDesk or other industry standard software
  • Experience with Finite Element Analysis (FEA) tools to analyze pressurized systems and secondary structures (ANSYS preferred)
  • Experience with REFPROP, SINDA/FLUINT and Thermal Desktop or other fluid modeling software
  • Experience with analysis/calculations of flow through components or systems
  • Knowledge of propulsion and fluid system components (i.e. valves, regulators, pressure vessels)
  • Must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident (current Green Card holder), or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum.
Preferred Qualifications
  • 3+ years’ experience in fluid systems design or M.S. degree in Mechanical, Aerospace or related field
  • Ability to iterate fluid designs quickly while mission architecture and customer requirements are in flux, making sound engineering judgments with incomplete data
  • Experience with launch vehicles, launch vehicle upper stages, spacecraft, or satellites
  • Experience in all phases of the product development cycle from definition through operation.
  • Experience in design for manufacturing and low-cost production solutions
  • Proven understanding of aerospace materials and treatments
  • Experience with cryogenic systems (LOX and LH2)
  • Experience with the design and development of seals
  • Experience designing and analyzing bolted joints
  • Hardware procurement and prototyping experience
Base Pay Range for:
  • CA applicants is $99,201.00 - $138,880.35
  • WA applicants is $99,201.00 - $138,880.35
