Job summary

The United States Air Force seeks a Flight Surgeon to serve as a primary care physician for air, space, and battle crews within a hospital environment.

You will lead a team to develop preventive practices to keep Airmen flying, while performing medical examinations and evaluating fitness for flight and duties. This is a full-time position with extensive training and relocation/travel opportunities.

Qualifications

• MD/DO required with U.S. residency and board certification in primary care.
• Current board certification in primary care (family, emergency, pediatrics, internal medicine) preferred.
• Must complete USAF Flying Class II flight physical.
• Completion of AMP course and eight-week Officer Training School.
• Citizenship and age requirements as stated.

Responsibilities

• Conduct medical examinations and provide care for air and missile crews.
• Determine fitness for flying and special duties and assess health hazards.
• Participate in flying missions to address aeromedical issues.
• Develop preventive medicine programs and educate flight personnel.
• Establish procedures for managing aviation casualties and disasters.
• Advise on aeromedical evacuation and assist on mishap investigations.
• Serve as liaison between squadrons and medical services.

Job Responsibilities

Career Tasks for Flight Surgeons

• Conduct medical examinations and provide care for air and missile crews
• Determine fitness for flying and special duties as well as evaluating living and working environments to detect and control health hazards
• Regularly participate in flying missions to observe and advise on aeromedical issues
• Develop and manage preventive medicine programs, including the education of flight personnel in healthy lifestyles
• Establish procedures for managing casualties in aviation accidents and other disasters
• Provide advise on aeromedical evacuation and serve on aviation mishap investigation boards
• Serve as the liaison between flying squadrons and medical services

Qualifications

To be considered, you must meet the following requirements:

• Completion of a U.S. residency at a fully accredited residency program with subsequent board certification in that primary specialty
• Board certification must be current and in a primary care specialty such as family, emergency, pediatrics, internal medicine or by the ABPM, and must show proof of primary care privileges for the 12 months directly preceding commissioning.
• Completion of a flight physical (USAF Flying Class II)
• Completion of the Aerospace Medicine Primary (AMP) course (~nine weeks)
• Completion of eight-week Officer Training School
• Must be a U.S. citizen between the ages of 18 and 47
• Must be willing to relocate
