Job summary

Bering-Alaka`ina Holdings, LLC is seeking a Part Time Flight Surgeon to provide aeromedical evaluation support at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Ohio. The role includes conducting FAA and USAF examinations, applying medical standards, and coordinating with aeromedical staff on certification and waiver processes.

The ideal candidate holds current board certification in Aerospace Medicine or a related field and has extensive active-duty Flight Surgeon experience. US citizenship is required.

Qualifications

  • Minimum 10 years of active duty U.S. military Flight Surgeon experience, within five years of hire.
  • Experience with aerospace and special operational evaluations and initial certification exams for flying/special duty applicants.
  • Familiarity with the MSD and DAFMAN 48-123 requirements for aeromedical assessments.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct medical examinations to determine fitness for flying duties.
  • Perform FAA examinations and submit documentation for certification.
  • Order consultations to support aeromedical recommendations for examinations.
  • Apply MSD/DAFMAN 48-123 guidelines in examinations and records.
  • Document and forward all examinations to USAF certification/waiver authorities.
  • Advise aeromedical staff on needed process improvements for compliance.
  • Submit waiver recommendations for medically disqualifying conditions.
  • Review laboratory and consultative evaluations to support decisions.
  • Deliver medical briefings and training for AMP, ACLS, PALS, ATLS, RAM, AAMIMO, AMIP, and related courses.

Job description

Bering-Alaka`ina Holdings, LLC is looking for a Part Time Flight Surgeon to provide support the711th HPW & USAFSAM/FEC, Aerospace at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Ohio.

DESCRIPTION OF RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Conduct medical examinations of personnel and make recommendations to determine fitness for flying duties.
  • Conduct Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) examinations and submit documentation for appropriate certification.
  • Identify and order consultations required to support aeromedical recommendations for all IFC/MFS examinations.
  • Analyze and apply medical standards on all physical examinations utilizing the current Medical Standards Directory (MSD), DAFMAN 48-123, USAF Aeromedical Waiver Guide, and other supporting resources as necessary.
  • Responsible for documenting and forwarding all medical examinations performed to the appropriate USAF certification and waiver authority.
  • Advise aeromedical staff on needed changes and improvement areas for accurate examination accomplishment IAW MSD, DAFMAN 48-123, and USAF Aeromedical Waiver Guide requirements.
  • Submits waiver recommendations for medically disqualifying conditions.
  • Reviews and makes recommendations on all laboratory and consultative evaluations performed.
  • Performs medical briefings and educational training activities for the following courses: Aerospace Medicine Primary (AMP), Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS), Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS), Residency in Aerospace Medicine (RAM), Advanced Aerospace Medicine for International Medical Officers (AAMIMO), Aviation Mishap Investigation and Prevention (AMIP), Global Medicine, and other courses as needed.
  • Supports training requests to demonstrate and describe routine branch function and how it supports the overall USAF aircrew medical evaluation mission and other topics as necessary.
REQUIRED DEGREE/EDUCATION/CERTIFICATION:

Current board certification in Aerospace Medicine, Family Medicine, Internal Medicine, Emergency Medicine, Occupational Medicine, Neurology, or Preventive Medicine is a requirement and must be maintained. Physicians are required to maintain clinical privileges in a qualifying board specialty through a minimum performance of 32 hours per year of clinical duties.

REQUIRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:
  • Successful completion of a minimum of 10 years active duty U.S. military Flight Surgeon experience, which must be within five years of date to hire.
  • Active duty flight surgeon experience must have included: sufficient experience in Air Force medical standards to conduct aerospace and special operational evaluations, including initial certification exams for flying/special duty applicants, conduct adaptability rating assessment for military special duty applicants and apply MSD and DAFMAN 48-123 requirements. Operational experience should also have provided a basis for expertise in training future flight surgeons and aerospace medicine specialist physicians.
  • Former Army and Navy Flight Surgeons with 10 years of active duty Flight Surgeon experience, and former Air Force Flight Surgeons who have been separated or retired more than 3 years, must attend the portion of the USAF Aerospace Medicine Primary (AMP) course required for active‑duty flight surgeons transferring to the USAF from the other Services before they will be granted Flight Medicine privileges.
  • (Exceptions: Air National Guard [ANG] or Air Force Reserve Command [AFRC] Flight Surgeons who are currently credentialed in Flight Medicine by the ANG or AFRC may utilize their current Flight Medicine credentials in the Flight Surgeon’s office while functioning in a civilian Flight Medicine physician role.
  • The current ANG/AFRC flight medicine credentials must be maintained to allow continued function in the civilian Flight Surgeon physician role.).
REQUIRED CITIZENSHIP AND CLEARANCE:
  • Must be a U.S. citizen.
  • Must be able to pass a Tier I background check (T1)/SF851.
