Job summary

City of Las Cruces is seeking a full-time automotive technician to perform general and routine maintenance on gasoline, CNG, and diesel vehicles. Work in a warehouse environment and follow safety standards.

You will inspect belts, hoses, tires, and perform oil/filter changes, minor welding, and keep mileage/service records. A valid driver’s license is required; NM Class B CDL with Passenger and Air Endorsement must be obtained within six months of hire. Team oriented with multi-tasking ability.

Qualifications

  • No specific education requirement; 1 year in automotive/heavy equipment repair or servicing.
  • Valid Class D driver’s license is required.
  • Must obtain NM Class B CDL with Passenger and Air Brake Endorsement within six months of hire.

Responsibilities

  • Inspect and service belts, hoses, tires and parts to determine repairs and test/diagnose issues.
  • Perform minor welding and general maintenance; change oil, fluids, and perform lube tasks.
  • Open power and hand tools and machinery to test and diagnose issues and maintain vehicles and equipment.
  • Maintain tools, equipment, and work areas in a clean, safe condition at all times.
  • Provide assistance to mechanics, staff, vendors, and customers; track vehicle mileage.
  • Respond to service calls and transport vehicles; maintain accurate records.
  • Drive and move vehicles as required.

Job description

Performs general and routine maintenance and repair services for various types of vehicles and related equipment which utilize gasoline, CNG, and diesel fuels.

Environmental Factors

Work is performed in a warehouse or workshop environment with exposure to vehicles fumes, dirt, grease, and vehicle fluids.

Physical Factors

Heavy physical demands. Frequent use of cleaning and mechanical equipment. Heavy physical work involving lifting and carrying items weighing up to 100 pounds.

Work Situation Factors

Position involves competing demands, performing multiple tasks, working to deadlines, occasional work beyond normal business hours, and responding to customer issues. Regular attendance is an essential function of this job to ensure continuity of services. Position is subject to drug testing in accordance with applicable State and Federal regulations and City of Las Cruces policies.

Meeting or exceeding the minimum qualifications does not guarantee an invitation to participate in the process. FIRST CONSIDERATION WILL BE GIVEN TO CURRENT CITY OF LAS CRUCES EMPLOYEES THAT MEET THE MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS.

Full-time, regular, non-exempt, union represented position.

This position is graded BC06.

  • Inspects and performs services on belts, hoses, tires and various other vehicle and/or equipment parts subject to wear and tear to determine necessary repairs; inspects, operates, and tests vehicles and equipment to diagnose minor mechanical issues.
  • Conducts regular general inspections of vehicles and equipment; performs minor welding repairs and general maintenance; performs lube, oil, and filter changes and checks and maintains necessary fluids in accordance with established standards and to ensure appropriate maintenance is completed.
  • Opens various power and hand tools and machinery necessary to test and diagnose issues and maintain and clean a variety of vehicles, machinery, equipment, tools, and facilities.
  • Maintains tools, equipment, and work areas clean and in safe condition at all times to comply with established policies, procedures, guidelines, and regulations.
  • Provides assistance and support to mechanics, other staff, vendors, and customers as needed; tracks and records mileage of all vehicles including buses and vans.
  • Responds to service calls, transports vehicles to and from various facilities and locations, and maintains accurate records.
  • Drives and moves vehicles as required.

No specific education requirement and one (1) year in automotive and/or heavy equipment repair and/or servicing. A combination of education, experience, and training may be applied in accordance with City of Las Cruces policy.

Licenses/Certification(s)

Valid Class D driver’s license is required. Must obtain a valid NM Class B Commercial Driver's License with Passenger and Air Brake Endorsement within six (6) months of hire date. Position requires an acceptable driving record in accordance with City of Las Cruces policies.

Knowledge of:

Standard tools, materials, methods, practices, hazards and safety procedures used in preventive maintenance of vehicles and equipment, tire repair, and other minor mechanical work; occupational and environmental safety and health hazards, and safety practices and procedures; applicable preventive maintenance schedules and procedures; methods and materials used in welding principles, practices, techniques, activities, rules, and regulations related to the operations and functions of the position and services provided; current principles of record keeping and records management; principles and practices of effective research methods and data analysis, customer service, and problem resolution techniques; occupational and environmental safety and health hazards, and safety practices; safe and effective use and maintenance of related tools, materials, and equipment; current methods and standards for preparing effective business correspondence; correct English usage, grammar, composition, spelling, punctuation and vocabulary; business and personal computers and related software applications; City organization, operations, policies, and procedures to effectively perform the required functions and duties of the position.

Ability to:
