Job summary

Sarasota County is seeking skilled auto and heavy equipment technicians to maintain and repair a wide range of fleet vehicles and equipment across multiple shop locations in Sarasota and Venice. You will diagnose, repair, and rebuild systems, perform inspections, and ensure safety and reliability of county assets.

Starting pay range posted is $24.19/hour with potential increases for experience and additional ASE/EVT certifications.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• 2+ years of mechanical experience in automotive or heavy vehicle repair.
• Florida Class B CDL with Tanker endorsement or ability to obtain within 6 months.
• Valid Florida Driver's License at time of hire.

Responsibilities

• Perform diagnostic tests to identify and repair malfunctions on diesel, gasoline, and electric equipment.
• Repair major and minor sub-systems across vehicles and equipment.
• Diagnose hydraulic issues, engines, pumps, cylinders, and control valves.
• Maintain and repair County fleet vehicles and equipment.
• Weld and cut parts as needed with welding equipment.
• Inspect and service brake, steering, and drive line components.
• Utilize laptops to record parts, labor, and repair details.

About this Role

• Perform diagnostic tests to identify, and rebuild and repair malfunctions on all diesel, gasoline, and electric equipment
• Make repairs to all major and minor sub-systems
• Diagnose hydraulic malfunctions, and engines, repair pumps, cylinders, and control valves
• Perform maintenance and repairs on everything from UTVs, auto, light/heavy trucks, trailers, pumps, construction, and other heavy equipment
• Troubleshoot and repair pumps, actuators, transmissions, compressors, pneumatic and electric controls, air-conditioning units, and components
• May weld and cut parts using welding equipment
• Perform inspections and serviceability/reliability checks/repairs/rebuilds on all brake, steering, and drive line components
• Utilizes laptop computers to complete, and verify parts/labor, and inputs comments to detail repairs made
• Perform maintenance and repairs on County fleet vehicles and equipment

Work Hours:

• Monday – Friday
• 7:00 a.m. – 3:30 p.m.
• *On-Call Required.

• Fleet Garage Pinkney Complex/ Ashton Shop: 4310 Ashton Road
• Venice Shop: 4571 St Rd. # 776, Venice

About You

Minimum Qualifications:

• A High School Diploma or its equivalent
• 2+ years of mechanical experience in automotive or heavy vehicle/equipment repair
• A valid Florida Class "B" Commercial Driver’s License with a Tanker endorsement or the ability to obtain within 6 months from the time of hire (Paid for by the county!)
• A valid Florida Driver's License at the time of hire

Preferred Qualifications:

• Complete and maintain a minimum of 2 ASE/EVT certifications (Paid for by the county!)
• Ability to obtain Hazmat certification (Paid for by the county!)
• Certification/ experience in basic welding
• Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions

** Must supply own basic tool set and rolling toolbox upon hire. This position is eligible for a $1,200.00 (net) annual tool allowance after the probationary period **

Physical Demands:Must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.

Subject to Passing Substance Screening: This position is subject to passing a pre-employment substance screening. An applicant who fails to pass a required drug screening test shall be disqualified from employment in any class for a period of 5 years.

• Potential higher pay (steps) for those with multiple years of experience

Additives/ Incentives:

• For Master status, as well as each ASE/EVT Certification obtained, there is an additional $0.20/hour pay additive!
• Only Pinkney Fire Shop (Station 20, Sarasota) location exclusive has an extra $2.00/hour incentive pay after the successful completion of the probationary period
