Job summary

Kuehne Chemical Company, Inc is seeking a Fleet Mechanic in South Kearny, NJ. You will maintain and repair company fleet equipment, coordinate with the Fleet Maintenance & Equipment Manager, dispatch, and drivers to keep equipment safe, reliable, and compliant with DOT regulations.

You will troubleshoot and repair diesel tractors and tanker trailers, perform preventive maintenance, and assist with parts inventory while traveling between locations as needed.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Minimum of 3 years of truck or diesel repair experience required.
  • CDL class A with X endorsement preferred or obtainable within first year.

Responsibilities

  • Troubleshoot, diagnose, and repair diesel tractors, tanker trailers, and other fleet equipment.
  • Perform scheduled preventive maintenance including oil changes, inspections, and system checks.
  • Repair brakes, suspension, electrical systems, aftertreatment, and drivetrain components.
  • Conduct DOT annual inspections and ensure regulatory compliance.
  • Perform roadside repairs and respond to emergency breakdowns as needed.
  • Maintain repair orders and maintenance records; review DVIRs.

Job Title: Fleet Mechanic

Classification: Hourly, Non-Exempt, Full Time

Department - Location: Transportation - NJ

Direct Supervisor: Fleet Maintenance & Equipment Manager

Job Summary:

The Fleet Mechanic is responsible for maintaining and repairing company fleet equipment. This role works closely with the Fleet Maintenance & Equipment Manager, dispatch, drivers, and other mechanics to ensure all equipment is safe, reliable, and compliant with company and DOT regulations.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

  • None
  • Troubleshoot, diagnose, and repair diesel tractors, tanker trailers, and other fleet equipment.
  • Perform scheduled preventive maintenance (PMs) including oil changes, inspections, and system checks.
  • Repair and maintain key components including brakes, suspension, electrical systems, aftertreatment systems, and drivetrain components.
  • Conduct DOT annual inspections and ensure all equipment meets regulatory requirements.
  • Perform roadside repairs and respond to emergency breakdowns as needed.
  • Repair tanker components including piping and valves.
  • Maintain and repair additional equipment such as front-end loaders and other company vehicles.
  • Utilize diagnostic software and tools to identify and resolve mechanical issues.
  • Complete and maintain accurate repair orders and maintenance records in a timely manner.
  • Review and respond to Driver Vehicle Inspection Reports (DVIRs).
  • Maintain shop organization, cleanliness, and safe working conditions.
  • Assist with parts inventory and ensure necessary materials are available.
  • Travel between company locations or vendors as needed.

Required Skills/Abilities:

  • Strong mechanical aptitude with the ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Proficiency with diagnostic tools and basic computer systems.
  • Ability to work in confined spaces (including tanker trailers).
  • Strong problem-solving and troubleshooting skills.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with team members and leadership.
  • Ability to operate shop and mobile equipment (e.g., forklifts, pallet jacks).
  • Willingness to respond to after-hours service calls as needed.
  • Must be able to pass a 10 panel controlled substance testing and random testing after that.
  • Must be able to pass a background investigation check and maintain in good standing order, as per TSA's TWIC criteria.

Must maintain a clean driving record.

Education and Experience:

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Minimum of 3 years of truck or diesel repair experience required.
  • Tanker trailer experience preferred but not required.
  • Class A CDL with X endorsement preferred, or ability to obtain within first year of employment.

Physical Requirements:

  • Must be able to lift, push, and pull up to 50 lbs.
  • Must be able to stand, walk, bend, kneel, and work in various positions throughout the day.
  • Must be able to work in varying weather and shop conditions.
  • Must be able to work in confined spaces as required.
  • Must own a basic set of heavy-duty mechanic tools.
