Job summary

Ecowaste Solutions is seeking a Fleet Manager to oversee the maintenance and repair of commercial vehicles in the Gardner, Kansas area. The ideal candidate will ensure compliance with stringent regulations and manage maintenance operations to maximize fleet reliability.

Responsibilities include developing maintenance schedules, managing vendor relations for repairs, and ensuring mechanics are properly trained. Successful candidates will possess extensive knowledge of Class 8 trucks and a track record of improving maintenance efficiency.

Qualifications

  • Minimum five years in fleet maintenance experience, including supervisory capacity.
  • Understanding of DOT inspection requirements and compliance standards.
  • Must have a valid CDL A driver’s license.

Job description

Position Summary

The Fleet Manager is responsible for the full fleet of primary and secondary equipment within the assigned area, in alignment with corporate objectives.

Reports To: Corporate Fleet Manager

Responsibilities
  • Perform essential duties and other minor duties may be assigned.
  • Oversee maintenance and repair operations for Class 8 commercial vehicles, including front-load, rear-load, roll-off, automated side-load, and other specialized vocational equipment.
  • Ensure proper diagnosis, repair, and preventative maintenance of diesel engines, transmissions, drivetrains, hydraulic systems, electrical systems, brake systems, suspension components, and emission control systems.
  • Develop and monitor preventative maintenance schedules to maximize fleet reliability and minimize downtime.
  • Review repair orders, work quality, labor efficiency, and parts utilization to ensure cost‑effective maintenance operations.
  • Monitor equipment lifecycle costs and make recommendations regarding replacement, refurbishment, and capital expenditures.
  • Maintain compliance with DOT, FMCSA, OSHA, and environmental regulations relating to fleet maintenance operations.
  • Coordinate emergency repairs and equipment recovery efforts as necessary.
  • Manage outside vendors and service providers to ensure quality repairs and competitive pricing.
  • Evaluate shop productivity metrics, vehicle availability, maintenance costs, and downtime trends to drive continuous improvement.
  • Ensure mechanics are properly trained on Class 8 truck systems, diesel diagnostics, hydraulic troubleshooting, and emerging vehicle technologies.
Supervisory Responsibilities
  • Mechanics and Operational Support staff.
Skills and Knowledge Requirements
  • Education: Bachelor’s degree (accredited), or in lieu of degree, High School Diploma or GED (accredited) or High School Equivalency and six (6) years of relevant work experience.
  • Experience: Minimum five (5) years of progressively responsible fleet maintenance experience with Class 8 trucks, heavy‑duty diesel engines, hydraulic systems, and vocational equipment, including at least three (3) years in a supervisory or management capacity.
  • Certificates, Licenses, Registrations or Other Requirements.
  • Experience utilizing fleet maintenance software and vehicle management systems.
  • Knowledge of DOT inspection requirements, compliance standards, and maintenance record‑keeping.
  • Extensive knowledge of Class 8 trucks, heavy‑duty diesel engines, hydraulic systems, vocational truck equipment, preventative maintenance programs, diagnostic procedures, and fleet safety practices.
  • Must possess good organizational skills and work independently.
Preferred Experience and Qualifications
  • Valid CDL A driver’s license with a clean driving record preferred.
  • Previous experience managing multiple maintenance facilities and mobile maintenance operations.
  • Experience with automated refuse collection equipment, compactors, hydraulic packer systems, and vocational truck bodies preferred.
  • Proven track record of reducing maintenance costs while improving fleet uptime and reliability.
Performance
  • Attendance and punctuality according to the work schedule are a must and are vital to the operations of the rest of the company.
  • Full time hours, additional hours may be needed.
Physical Requirements
  • Required to use motor coordination with finger dexterity (such as keyboarding, machine operation, tools etc.) most of the workday.
  • Required to exert physical effort in handling objects more than 30 pounds.
  • Occasional exposure to physical occupational risks (such as cuts, burns, exposure to toxic chemicals, etc.).
  • Occasional exposure to physical environment which involves dirt, odors, noise, weather extremes or similar elements.
