Job summary

Town of Oro Valley is accepting applications for a Fleet Maintenance Mechanic I, II, and III. A single vacancy will be filled at the appropriate classification level based on qualifications and experience.

Under supervision, performs maintenance on Town fleet vehicles, diagnostics, and repairs; maintains records; routes vehicles as needed. Requires a High School diploma or GED, 3 years of automotive maintenance, and a valid Class D Arizona driver's license.

Qualifications

  • High School diploma or GED.
  • Three (3) years’ experience performing routine automotive maintenance.
  • Valid Class D Arizona driver license on first day of employment.
  • Equivalent combination of education and experience considered.
  • Must possess A5 – Brakes and Tire Inspection, Balancing, and Replacement, and A6 – Electrical/Electronic Systems.
  • Must obtain 609 certification within six months.
  • Within 18 months must obtain ASE Master Certification: A1–A8 as listed.

Responsibilities

  • Disassembles units, inspects and repairs or replaces parts, and reassembles units in heavy equipment and vehicles.
  • Diagnoses, services, and repairs various systems on vehicles.
  • Maintains the shop and office area by inventory and cleaning of tools, and equipment, emptying trash and sweeping and mopping of floors.
  • Performs general maintenance and repair activities on various types of vehicles and heavy equipment.
  • Performs Preventative Maintenance inspections on equipment and vehicles.
  • Routes vehicles to dealers or repair shops as required.
  • Assists Fleet Maintenance Mechanic III on heavy equipment maintenance and repair.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Starting Salary Depending on Experience and Qualifications

We are accepting applications for Fleet Maintenance Mechanic I, II, and III. Only one vacancy exists and will be filled at the appropriate classification level based on the successful candidate's qualifications, experience, and ability to meet the minimum requirements of the position.

Under general supervision, performs general maintenance on Town Fleet vehicles. Performs a full range of automotive mechanic assignments using independent judgment to make decisions requiring the application of procedures and practices to specific work situations including completing and maintaining records of work scheduled or performed.

  • Disassembles units, inspects and repairs or replaces parts, and reassembles units in heavy equipment and vehicles.
  • Diagnoses, services, and repairs various systems on vehicles.
  • Maintains the shop and office area by inventory and cleaning of tools, and equipment, emptying trash and sweeping and mopping of floors.
  • Performs general maintenance and repair activities on various types of vehicles and heavy equipment.
  • Performs Preventative Maintenance inspections on equipment and vehicles by performing oil changes, changing flat tires, and performing routine repairs to vehicles and equipment.
  • Routes vehicles to dealers or repair shops as required.
  • Assists Fleet Maintenance Mechanic III on heavy equipment maintenance and repair.
  • Other duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in written communication.
  • Ability to effectively diagnose and troubleshoot required maintenance and repairs on Town Fleet equipment and vehicles.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
  • Ability to keep and maintain accurate records using the Town’s fleet maintenance program.
  • Ability to maintain accurate records of work projects and supply usage.
  • Ability to operate assigned equipment and vehicles and to verbally communicate to exchange information.
  • Ability to organize work, set priorities, meet critical deadlines and follow up on work assignments with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to prioritize multiple tasks and demands.
  • Knowledge of equipment and vehicles.
  • Knowledge of Town and Department policies and procedures.
  • Skill in the use of automotive servicing equipment such as A/C recycler, hydraulic jack, or emission analyzer.
  • Skill in the use of Microsoft Office suite and the Town’s Work Order and Fleet Maintenance programs.
  • Ability to follow verbal and written instructions.
  • A High School diploma or GED.
  • Three (3) years’ experience performing routine automotive maintenance.
  • Must possess a valid Class D Arizona driver license upon the first day of employment.
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
  • Must possess A5 – Brakes and Tire Inspection, Balancing, and Replacement, and A6 – Electrical/Electronic Systems.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Any ASE certifications in the A, C, G and T series.
  • CDL Driver’s License.
  • Work is performed primarily in a shop environment and/or occasional field environment with some travel from site to site; exposure to noise, dust, grease, smoke, fumes, noxious odors, gases, and all types of weather and temperature conditions; exposure to hazardous traffic conditions; work and/or walk on various types of surfaces including slippery or uneven surfaces and rough terrain.
  • Must be able to lift or move over fifty (50) pounds.
  • Regular, daily attendance is an essential function for this position.
  • May be required to work extended hours including evenings and weekends.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
  • Must obtain 609 certification within six months.
  • Within the first 18 months of employment must be able to obtain ASE Master Certification: A1 – Engine Repair; A2 – Automatic Transmission/Transaxle; A3 – Manual Drive Train & Axles; A4 – Suspension & Steering; A5 – Brakes; A6 – Electrical/Electronic Systems; A7 – Heating & Air Conditioning; A8 – Engine Performance.
  • This position is considered a Safety Sensitive position and is subject to Drug and Alcohol testing as required by FTA CFR 49.
