We’re currently seeking a skilled Heavy Equipment Mechanic to join our team and support the maintenance of critical city vehicles and equipment.
What You'll Do
As a Heavy Equipment Mechanic, you’ll play a vital role in maintaining and repairing a wide range of specialized vehicles and machinery, including:
- Fire equipment and emergency response vehicles.
- Heavy diesel trucks and refuse collection vehicles.
- Earth-moving and construction equipment with hydraulic systems.
Your Responsibilities Will Include
- Performing preventative maintenance and safety inspections.
- Diagnosing and repairing mechanical issues using scan tools.
- Test-driving vehicles to verify repairs.
- Documenting services and repairs on work orders.
- Supporting emergency response efforts during severe weather events such as floods or storms.

IDEAL CANDIDATE
We’re Looking For Candidates Who Bring a Strong Technical Background And a Commitment To Public Service. The Ideal Candidate Will Have
- Knowledge in using fleet maintenance management software (i.e., Fleet Focus M5, Faster Asset Solutions) to enter repair information.
SALARY
Pay Range: $34.08 to $43.49 per hour.
Hiring Range: $34.08 to $37.58 per hour.

Minimum Qualifications
- Five years of experience as a skilled automotive mechanic, including work on heavy-duty construction or firefighting equipment OR
- Completion of a recognized heavy-duty equipment mechanic apprenticeship.
- Other combinations of experience and education that meet the minimum requirements may be substituted.
- All finalists for positions are subject to a criminal background check applicable to the department or position.
- Some positions require the use of personal or City vehicles on City business. Individuals must be physically capable of operating the vehicles safely, possess a valid driver's license, and have an acceptable driving record. Use of a personal vehicle for City business will be prohibited if the employee is not authorized to drive a City vehicle or if the employee does not have personal insurance coverage.

Work And Environmental Conditions Requirements
- Working irregular hours, second and/or third shifts, weekends, holidays, and evenings.
- Moving objects weighing up to 50 pounds.
- Working outside in a variety of environmental extremes such as heat, cold, rain, air pollution, and dust.
Preferred Qualifications
The minimum qualifications listed above, plus:
Experience With
- Repairing and adjusting hydraulic pumps, safety valves, and load packers on garbage and dump trucks.
- Inspecting, repairing and adjusting diesel power units, hydraulic systems, injection valves and systems, mold boards, and scarifiers on road graders.
- Inspecting, adjusting and repairing gasoline and diesel tractors, and hydraulic and cable operated attachments on tractors.
- Performing incidental welding operations on equipment.
- Providing superior seamless customer service, integrity, and commitment to innovation, efficiency, and fiscally responsible activity.
- Operating and maintenance requirements of heavy duty construction equipment.
- The care and use of hand and power tools employed in all phases of heavy equipment mechanical maintenance and repair work.
- Using automotive servicing equipment such as A/C recycler, hydraulic jack, or emission analyzer.
- Installing, replace or adjust filters, belts, or similar objects to maintain equipment.
- Reading, understanding, and applying information from charts, graphs, and manuals.
