Job summary

Keel is seeking a Fitter to assemble, fit, and align fabricated structural steel components per engineering drawings. You will plan fabrication sequences, prepare assemblies for welding, and ensure quality, accuracy, and safety throughout the process.

Ideal candidates have 2–4 years in structural fitting or metal fabrication, with experience reading blueprints and using fabrication tools. Occasional travel between plants may be required, and we offer comprehensive benefits and growth

Your Mission:

Fitter with experience assembling, fitting, and aligning fabricated structural steel components according to engineering drawings and blueprint specifications. Proficient in planning fabrication sequences, interpreting technical drawings, and preparing assemblies for welding while maintaining quality, accuracy, and safety standards.

Explore the Depth of the Role:
  • Read and interpret blueprints, drawings, and fabrication specifications.
  • Lay out, fit, align, and assemble structural steel components.
  • Measure, mark, and verify dimensions using precision measuring tools.
  • Set up and use jigs, fixtures, and face blocks for fabrication.
  • Position and move materials using hoists, cranes, and rigging equipment.
  • Align and secure parts using hand tools, clamps, jacks, and wedges.
  • Prepare metal for welding by grinding, beveling, and torch cutting.
  • Assist welders by ensuring proper fit-up and assembly.
  • Straighten and repair warped or misaligned metal components.
  • Tack weld components as needed before final welding.
  • Inspect assemblies for accuracy and quality before welding.
  • Maintain a safe, clean, and organized work environment.
  • Follow company safety procedures and quality standards.
  • Work effectively under general supervision and as part of a fabrication team
Requirements
Mission Readiness:
  • High school diploma or GED preferred.
  • 2–4 years of experience in structural steel fitting, metal fabrication, or a related field.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints and fabrication drawings.
  • Knowledge of structural fitting techniques, welding preparation, and metal layout.
  • Relevant industry certifications as required by employer or project specifications.
  • Experience operating fabrication tools, rigging equipment, hoists, and overhead cranes preferred.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, drawings, and specifications.
  • Strong knowledge of structural steel fitting and fabrication techniques.
  • Proficient in the safe use of hand tools, power tools, and fabrication equipment.
  • Ability to accurately measure, lay out, and align structural components.
  • Knowledge of welding preparation, grinding, beveling, and torch cutting.
  • Experience using hoists, cranes, rigging, and lifting equipment safely.
  • Strong mathematical and problem-solving skills.
  • Attention to detail and commitment to quality workmanship.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Strong communication and time management skills.
  • Knowledge of workplace safety practices and OSHA standards.
  • Ability to perform physically demanding work, including lifting, climbing, bending, and standing for extended periods.
Travel Requirements:
  • Occasional travel between plants as needed.
Physical Requirements:
  • May be required to stand, walk, sit, reach/pull/push with hands and arms, climb or balance, stoop or kneel regularly.
  • May lift or carry 50lbs. Weights exceeding 50lbs will require mechanical means to maneuver.
