Job summary

Wildlife Resources/Apple Grove Hatchery in West Virginia seeks a Fish Culturist 3/Technician 2 to perform skilled hatchery work, brood stock management and fish releases. The role includes maintenance of facilities and participation in public outreach and education activities.

Must hold a valid driver's license; AS degree in fish/wildlife management or related field is preferred, or a high school diploma with 4 years of related experience. CDL may be required.

Qualifications

Responsibilities

• Care for brood stock fish, spawn and grade, monitor growth and health.
• Aid in collecting brood stock, spawning, grading, and health checks for hatchery fish.
• Load fish into hauling tanks, transport fingerlings and release into waters.
• Maintain hatchery buildings, grounds and equipment; assist with public outreach.

Job description

Wildlife Resources/Apple Grove Hatchery

Under general supervision of the Fish Culturist 3 at the Apple Grove Fish Hatchery, the Fish and Wildlife Technician 2 performs skilled work in hatching, growing and distributing fish, and general maintenance of fish hatchery buildings, grounds, and equipment. Work includes collection of brood stock fish, spawning of fish, grading, monitoring growth, condition, and health of hatchery reared fish. Loads fish into hauling tanks on trucks; transports fingerlings and catchable size fish and releases them into specific waters. Participating in public outreach and educational activities will be required. Work can be physically demanding and performed in varying climatic conditions. Incumbent may be required to be a lead worker to small groups on specific projects. Incumbent must have a valid State driver's license. Performs related work as required. Regular attendance is required.

Training

• Associate of Science degree from a regionally accredited college or university in fish or wildlife management, natural resources management, fish culture, agriculture or related field.
• OR
• Substitution: High school diploma or the equivalent.
• AND
• Experience: Four (4) years of full-time or equivalent part-time paid experience in fish or wildlife management, fish culture or agriculture.

Special Requirement

• A valid driver's license is required. May be required to obtain a commercial driver's license. May be required to successfully complete special natural resource police officer training and pistol qualification requirements as established by the Division of Natural Resources, Law Enforcement Section.

Preference will be given to candidates with fish culture and fish disease experience and strong background in trade skills and equipment operations.
