Hamilton Miller & Birthisel LLP is seeking an experienced attorney in Tampa to independently manage defense litigated cases focused on general liability, including first- and third-party claims. You will own deadlines, strategy, trial prep, and client communications within Florida state courts, collaborating with partners and staff.

Requirements include a J.D., Florida bar admission, and 2–5 years in insurance defense.

Qualifications

Responsibilities

Job description

Summary:

We are seeking an Attorney that is a self-starter and has experience independently managing defense litigated cases focused on general liability matters (first- and third-party property, casualty and BI) with oversight by the supervising partner. The role requires full ownership of case deadlines, case strategy determination, trial preparation, and client communications within Florida state courts while working directly with supervising partner. The position involves case handling from either claim inspection and /or defense assignment for determining initial case strategy and development, drafting motions, attending hearings, taking depositions, possible site inspections, and trial preparations. This role will be to work closely with the supervising partner, paralegal and legal assistant team. (Case load approximately 30-40) Supervisory Responsibilities: This position has no direct supervisory responsibilities. However, the individual may provide indirect guidance or task coordination to legal assistants, clerical staff, or interns in connection with case preparation and defense-related activities.

Responsibilities:
  • Independently manages general track of cases involving general liability with minimal oversight by managing partner.
  • Comfortable in depositions, hearings, and communicating directly with clients and/or opposing counsel.
  • Trial experience is a plus but not required.
  • Conducts depositions
  • Drafts and argues dispositive motions, including motions for summary judgment, and appears at related hearings.
  • Performs site inspections and attends in-person depositions as required.
  • Prepares litigation strategy, evaluates exposure, and advises clients on case direction with a trial-ready approach.
  • Ownership over file deadlines, case management deadlines, compliance with court rules and local procedural requirements.
  • Utilizes internal and external resources as needed to address complex legal and factual issues.
Education & Experience:
  • Juris Doctor (J.D.) from an accredited law school.
  • Admitted to practice in the state of Florida.
  • Minimum of 2-5 years of experience in insurance defense (e.g. general liability, third-party insurance defense, and/or first party property/ casualty defense).

    • Working at a computer for extended periods (on-screen reading, drafting, and typing)
    • Participating in virtual meetings and conference calls
    • Attending in-person meetings as needed
  • Manage competing priorities and work effectively under pressure in a fast‑paced environment.
  • Perform other duties, tasks, or projects as assigned.
