The Northbrook Fire Department is now accepting applications for the position of Firefighter Paramedic to establish a new eligibility list. Join a progressive, community-focused department dedicated to excellence in emergency services. There are currently two (2) vacancies. Applications must be submitted by September 1, 2026 to be considered for the process outlined below.
Tentative selection process timeline
Final Eligibility list will be compiled following claims for preference points and will be valid for one (1) year. The Village will re-open the application process based on vacancies.

High School Diploma Upload a clear copy of your high school diploma or equivalent. This document must show your name, the school or program and the date you graduated or completed the program. Additionally, please also includeone of the following as proof of meeting the education minimum qualification.Associates or completion of 60 hours of course work or equivalent credits at a junior college or a university accredited by a nationally recognized accreditation agency; orValid Paramedic License; orBasic Operations Firefighter OR Firefighter II State certifications.

CPAT with Ladder test issued / dated within twelve (12) months of application.
Minimum Age 21
Less than 35 years of age unless the applicant is exempt from that age limitation under 65 ILCS5/10-2.1-6 of the Act. so long as they are under the age of 40. Individuals who were previously full-time firefighters with a municipality or fire protection district are exempt from the maximum age limitation.

College Requirement
Must have a high school diploma or equivalent and Emergency Medical Technician - Basic (EMT-B) certificate AND one of the following.
Prior Experience Requirement No
EMT Certification At time of application candidates must have EMT-B certification; however, EMT-P (Paramedic) is preferred and eligible for preference points.
Other Preference Points
Candidateswho achieve a passing score on the written examination are eligible to claimpreference points. Applicants may claim a maximum of fifteen (15) preferencepoints.
Preferencepoints will only be awarded upon submission of a completed Preference PointClaim Form and all required supporting documentation. The claim form andsupporting documentation must be submitted to the Village within ten (10) daysafter the initial eligibility list is established.
Once theinitial eligibility list has been established, Human Resources will notifyeligible candidates and provide instructions for submitting a Preference PointClaim Form and the required supporting documentation. Preference points areoffered in the following categories:
