Job summary

Sutter County is hiring a Firefighter to respond to rescue calls, administer emergency medical care, and perform firefighting duties. The role includes operating equipment, inspecting for hazards, and participating in training and disaster response.

Successful candidates will have an accredited fire academy graduation and hold EMT I and FF I certificates, plus CPAT certification within 6 months of hire. Expect a demanding schedule with 56 hours per week and 48-hour shifts.

Qualifications

  • Successful graduation from an accredited fire academy.
  • Possession of a valid Emergency Medical Technician I Certificate and California State Fire Marshal Firefighter I Certificate.
  • Applicants must supply a current CPAT certification within 6 months of hire and may be required to pass a comprehensive medical examination.

Responsibilities

  • Responds to rescue calls and administers emergency medical care.
  • Responds to fire alarms; removes persons from danger.
  • Operates fire equipment and pumps, lays and connects fire hose lines, uses extinguishers, bars, hooks, lines, and other equipment, raises/lowers/climbs ladders.
  • Ventilates buildings to release heat and smoke; places salvage covers to prevent water damage and rekindle fires.
  • Inspects buildings for fire hazards and code violations; recommends corrective action.
  • Cleans and inspects fire equipment; lubricates and repairs equipment.
  • Maintains fuel and oil supply; cleans and tests hoses.
  • Inspects fire hydrants; clears weeds; paints hydrants/boxes; maintains assigned fire house areas.
  • Participates in training exercises and fire drills.
  • Provides fire prevention training and first aid; performs strenuous tasks under challenging conditions.
  • Disaster Service Workers: All employees may be required to perform emergency services during declared emergencies.

The following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other related duties may be required and assigned.

  1. Responds to rescue calls and administers emergency medical care.
  2. Responds to fire alarms; removes persons from danger.
  3. Operates fire equipment and pumps, lays and connects fire hose lines, uses chemical extinguisher, bars, hooks, lines, and other equipment, raising, lowering, and climbing ladders.
  4. Ventilates building to release heat and smoke, places salvage covers to prevent water damage and to prevent the fires from rekindling.
  5. Inspects buildings, schools, and places of public assembly for fire hazards and fire code violations and recommends corrective action.
  6. Cleans and inspects fire equipment, lubricates, makes adjustments, and repairs equipment.
  7. Maintains fuel and oil supply and cleans and tests fire hoses,
  8. Inspects fire hydrants, clears weeds and brush, paints hydrants and fire alarm boxes, cleans and maintains assigned part of fire house and grounds.
  9. Participates in training exercises and fire drills.
  10. Fire prevention training, classes in fire suppression techniques, and first aid.
  11. Some training requires strenuous exertion under conditions involving fire, heat, smoke, and cramped surroundings.
Knowledge of:

Modern firefighting methods and fire prevention; operation and care of fire apparatus; use and care of fire equipment, tools, devices, and facilities; and current emergency medical aid procedures.

Ability to:

Administer emergency medical care; demonstrate physical endurance, agility, and strength; climb ladders and work at considerable heights; think and act quickly in emergencies; understand and follow oral and written directions promptly and accurately; learn and follow fire department rules, instructions, firefighting methods, and techniques; perform mechanical work involved in maintaining firefighting and rescue apparatus; interpret various ordinances, fire codes, and departmental rules regulating fire prevention and suppression systems.

Education and Experience:

Successful graduation from an accredited fire academy.

Essential Duties require the following physical skills and work requirements:

Ability to think and act quickly in emergencies; effectively deal with personal danger; maintain physical condition appropriate to the performance of assigned duties and responsibilities including running, walking, crouching or crawling during emergency operations, moving equipment and injured/deceased persons, climbing stairs/ladders, performing life‑saving and rescue procedures, and operating assigned equipment and vehicles; maintain effective audio‑visual discrimination and perception needed for making observations and communicating with others.

Disaster Service Workers:

All Sutter County employees are designated as Disaster Service Workers during a proclaimed emergency and may be required to perform certain emergency services at the direction of the department and/or County.

License or Certificate:

Possession of a valid Emergency medical Technician I Certificate. Possession of a California State Fire Marshal Firefighter I Certificate Successful applicants may be required to pass a comprehensive medical examination. This classification may require a valid California driver’s license.
