Job summary

The City of Olympia Fire Department is seeking dedicated firefighters to respond to fires, medical emergencies, and hazardous materials incidents, often under strenuous and hazardous conditions.

Duties include driving fire apparatus, delivering emergency medical care, performing inspections, maintenance, and training, and providing community fire-safety education. Candidates must meet education/certification requirements and complete CPAT.

Qualifications

• Ability to learn the geography of the City, the location of important buildings, and the street system.
• Ability to learn and apply the principles, practices, and techniques of firefighting.
• Ability to cope with emergency situations firmly, courteously, and with respect for the rights of citizens.
• Ability to acquire and maintain state, federal and local certifications as required.
• Ability to analyze situations quickly and objectively and determine proper courses of action based upon training.
• Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions.
• Ability to sustain heavy physical labor during periods of intense activity in emergency situations.
• Skill in EMT/first aid practices and in the use and maintenance of fire equipment/apparatus.
• Ability to work effectively as a team member and work independently when appropriate.
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, supervisors, and the general public.
• Ability to work within a command structure requiring adherence to orders.
• Ability to be discreet and maintain a high degree of confidentiality, accountability, responsibility, and accuracy.

Responsibilities

• Drives or rides a fire vehicle to alarms and operates equipment and ladders.
• Responds to pre-hospital EMS calls and provides emergency medical care.
• Responds to hazardous materials incidents with protective gear.
• Participates in training drills and firefighting-related classes.
• Performs protective inspections and conducts fire-safety education.
• Services and maintains department equipment and apparatus.
