Overview
The Firefighter/EMT is primarily responsible for performing fire suppression and rescue activities. This position will work as part of a response team dedicated to saving lives and protecting property at the Wallops Flight Facility, Wallops Island, and the surrounding communities when called upon for mutual aid. Physical fitness to perform these duties is essential, and the Firefighter must always remain in full duty status to perform these functions. The Firefighter must be able to wear protective ensembles, including structural bunker gear, total encapsulating HazMat suits, self-contained breathing apparatus, class 3 harness, and any other ensemble deemed required for the functions of their duty.
Responsibilities
- Follow all company personnel and safety policies and perform all assigned duties in a safe work manner.
- Arrive at work on time and be in proper uniform with issued equipment. Responsible for the cleanliness of uniform and equipment assigned.
- Attend training courses, read, and understand assigned material related to emergency medical care, firefighting, ARFF, Hazardous Materials/WMD, Technical Rescue, and fire prevention.
- Respond to fire alarms, operate auxiliary equipment, deploy hose lines, operate nozzles, direct water streams, raise ladders, climb ladders, use fire extinguishers, forcible entry equipment, fans, saws, hooks, ropes, gas detectors, Thermal Imaging Cameras, computers, radios, and other equipment.
- Respond to vehicle accident scenes and perform extrication techniques using specialized heavy hydraulic equipment during emergency situations.
- Operate in hazardous environments, confined spaces, and at heights.
- Possess knowledge of size-up, rescue procedures, fire suppression techniques, and their application in buildings, facilities, and aircraft-related materials and systems.
- Perform rescue of incapacitated personnel as required.
- Provide standby support for aircraft arrivals/departures and related activities as required.
- Comply with department policies, rules, and regulations.
- Provide hazardous operational standbys as required.
- Maintain fire station, fire apparatus, tools, and appliances in a constant state of readiness.
- Possess considerable knowledge of all fire apparatus, equipment, and their operation.
- Perform general upkeep of fire department property; prepare and submit reports and forms regarding supplies, equipment, and other matters pertaining to his/her unit.
- Wash, clean, and disinfect equipment, apparatus, and facilities.
- Inspect PPE daily to ensure its serviceability and provide periodic reports on PPE.
- Participate in training exercises/scenarios and review and comply with Standard Operating Procedures.
- Conduct fire hydrant flow tests and record information for department use.
- Conduct annual hose testing and record information for department use.
- Ensure vehicles and equipment are in a constant state of readiness.
- Perform basic fire prevention duties and pre-fire planning as required.
- Personnel assigned to this classification are subject to perform at the Technical Rescue and Haz Mat operational level and may be required to obtain technician level certification in these areas as required to participate in any specialty function.
- Drive and operate government vehicles.
- Receive and complete training for launch pad flight hardware fires and launch support as directed.
- Participate in certification training classes when offered and pass such classes per the certification criteria.
- This position does not have any supervisory responsibilities.
- Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Must possess a high school diploma or GED.
- Must be at least 21 years of age.
- Must meet all standards as required by Statement of Work.
- Honorably discharged from the Armed Services (If Applicable).
- Successfully completed all training and obtained all required licenses, certifications, and security/medical clearances for the site.
- Required to adhere to all government agency guidelines as it applies to COVID vaccine Attestation/Restrictions.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Must possess a DOD/IFSAC, Pro Board, or State Firefighter I and II certifications.
- Must possess a State of Virginia Emergency Medical Technician (EMT-B) License.
- Must possess technical rescue certifications to the Awareness Level for Rope Rescue, Confined Space Rescue, Vehicle and Machinery Rescue, Trench Rescue, and Structural Collapse Rescue, and Hazardous Materials certification to the Operations Level within one year of hire date; preference given to those already certified to these levels.
- Must possess one of the following certifications – DOD/IFSAC ARFF Firefighter, or Pro Board ARFF Firefighter within one year of hire date; preference given to those already certified as an IFSAC or Pro Board ARFF Firefighter.
- Must possess a valid American Heart Association BLS for Healthcare Providers (CPR and AED) certification card.
- Must have successfully completed the latest editions of the FEMA NIMS courses IS-100, IS-200, IS-700, and IS-800.
- Must possess an Emergency Vehicle Operator’s Course Certificate.
- Must possess and maintain a valid state driver’s license that is deemed acceptable by the Wallops Flight Facility.
- Must speak, read, write, and understand the English language, apply written rules, detailed orders, instructions, and training material.
- Have no record or history of illegal drug use, sale, possession, or manufacture.
- Have no felony convictions and no convictions that reflect on the individual’s reliability.
- Must be able to meet and maintain NASA Physical Certifications.
- Must be able to successfully pass all required Psychological examinations.
- Must be able to meet drug testing and alcohol-free workforce requirements to include random drug and/or alcohol testing.
Physical Demands:
- While performing the duties of this Job, the employee is regularly required to sit and talk or hear. The employee is frequently required to walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel and reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to stand; climb or balance and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move 170 pounds or more. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision.
- Must successfully complete a pre-employment Combat Task Test (CTT) and annually thereafter as prescribed by the government.
- Ascend and descend 75 feet of stairway while carrying a 14-pound simulated high-rise pack.
- Hoist a 50’ roll of 1-3/4” hose with nozzle, using a 1/2” to 5/8” rope, to a height of 50 feet.
- Simulate forcible entry by hitting a 150 lb. beam with a 9 lb. sledgehammer to move the beam 5 ft. (Keiser Force Machine). Firefighters must keep both hands below a tape-marked line on the sledgehammer which is 1 foot down from the head of the sledgehammer, and only contact the beam with the head of the sledgehammer.
- Lift, drag or carry a 170 lb. mannequin 85 ft.
- The CTT must be completed wearing full NFPA approved protective clothing to include full structural firefighting bunker gear (coat, pants, boots, gloves, hood, and helmet). A supplied self-contained breathing apparatus with a composite bottle shall be worn and personnel shall wear the face mask, maintain an adequate respiratory seal and breathe bottled air while performing all elements of the test.
- The CTT must be completed within 7 minutes.
Work Environment:
- The employee will normally work in a temperature-controlled office environment, with frequent exposure to electronic office equipment.
- The employee will be required to adjust to a controlled environment during normal daily activities to the extremely hot and possibly cold environments associated with firefighting duties at a moment’s notice.
- During visits to areas of operations, may be exposed to extreme cold or hot weather conditions. Is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, and loud noise.
The candidate must successfully complete a 6-month probationary period unless CBA requirements stipulate otherwise.
