Seattle Firefighters save lives and protect property through emergency medical service, fire and rescue response, and fire prevention. All Seattle Firefighters are either EMT or Paramedic certified, and approximately 80% of the emergency calls the department receives are medical in nature.

Candidates who pass all portions of the civil service exam (FireTEAM, PSSA1, and oral board) will be placed on an eligibility list according to their final examination score (including veterans' preference points, if applicable). Candidates will be informed of their final score and ranking on the eligibility list by approximately March 1, 2027. The role of the Civil Service Department is to establish an eligibility list and, upon request by the Seattle Fire Department, to certify the top 25% of all the candidates on the eligibility list. The Fire Department will directly contact those individuals who will proceed to the next step in the pre-employment process. The Seattle Fire Department makes all hiring decisions after a pre-employment selection process, which includes a background investigation, additional interviews, physical agility test, psychological and medical exams. A pre-employment drug test is required by the Seattle Fire Department. Dishonesty or failure to disclose a material fact during any stage of the hiring process is grounds for disqualification.
