Job summary

The City of Spring Hill Fire Department is seeking a Firefighter II to join a dedicated team. Under supervision, you will prevent, combat and extinguish fires, protect lives and property, and maintain equipment readiness across shifts.

You will respond to emergencies, provide EMS care within certification scope, participate in training, and comply with NFPA standards and department policies. A strong commitment to safety, teamwork, and community service is essential.

Qualifications

  • H.S diploma or equivalent.
  • Tennessee Fire Commission Firefighter II Certification, or IFSAC/Pro Board Firefighter II with 90-day reciprocity.
  • State of Tennessee EMT, AEMT, or Paramedic License; or National Registry with reciprocity within 90 days.
  • Current AHA BLS Certification.

Job description

Working under the supervision of the Company Officer, or higher-ranking Fire personnel, incumbent performs duties to prevent, combat and extinguish fires, protect lives and properties, maintain firefighting equipment, respond to other emergencies, keep equipment and personnel in a state of readiness for such emergencies. The incumbent is expected to exercise good judgment, independence, initiative, and professional expertise in conducting day-to-day operations. All work duties and activities must be performed in accordance with the City Handbook and Department's operating regulations, SOGs, policies and procedures as well as federal, state, and local regulations.

Perform other related duties as assigned.

Communication, Professionalism & Teamwork
  • Interacts with the public, City employees, outside agencies, and emergency personnel with patience, tact, respect, and professionalism.
  • Reads, writes, listens to, and comprehends instructions, information, reports, and other job-related materials.
  • Communicate effectively by voice, radio, or other means with Fire Department personnel and emergency responders to relay observations, equipment needs, and other relevant information.
  • Follows orders, directives, and established procedures from supervisors
Emergency Response & Fire Suppression
  • Responds promptly to fire, emergency, and other assigned calls by reporting to the assigned apparatus and traveling to the emergency scene.
  • Drives and operates fire apparatus, vehicles, tools, and related equipment.
  • Connects, lays, carries, and operates fire hose lines from hydrants and apparatus to the emergency scene.
  • Combats fires using nozzles and streams of water, fog, chemicals, and other extinguishing agents.
  • Enter fire areas, including confined spaces and areas requiring movement up or down stairs, as necessary to suppress fires and protect life and property.
  • Removes objects from structures, places protective covers over property, and monitors assigned areas for signs of fire reoccurrence
Rescue & Emergency Medical Services
  • Carries, drags, lifts, and transports EMS equipment, tools, and other emergency equipment to incident scenes.
  • Removes and assists individuals from dangerous situations, including carrying unconscious or injured persons.
  • Provides emergency medical treatment to injured or ill persons within the scope of certification and Department requirements.
  • Maintains required EMS certification in accordance with Department standards.
Technical Firefighting & Physical Operations
  • Raises, climbs, and works from ladders.
  • Crawls, walks, and operates in challenging environments, including roofs, floors, confined spaces, and other hazardous areas.
  • Creates openings and accesses structures using axes, bars, hooks, and other firefighting tools for entry, rescue, ventilation, and fire suppression.
  • Lifts, carries, drags, pushes, pulls, and handles hose, equipment, tools, and other materials required during emergency operations.
Training, Instruction & Professional Development
  • Participates in required training involving firefighting, emergency medical aid, emergency procedures, equipment operation, and related subjects.
  • Conducts fire drills and critiques participants regarding emergency procedures and performance.
  • Provides instruction to groups regarding fire safety, emergency procedures, and related topics.
  • Maintains knowledge and skills necessary to perform assigned duties safely and effectively.
Equipment, Facilities & Department Maintenance
  • Cleans and maintains Department equipment, fire apparatus, hose, tools, facilities, walls, floors, and other assigned areas.
  • Performs routine maintenance and housekeeping activities necessary to maintain Department equipment and structures in a safe and operational condition.
Health, Safety, Fitness & Regulatory Compliance
  • Meets applicable requirements of NFPA 1500, OSHA 1910.134, and the Spring Hill Fire Department Respiratory Protection Plan for the use of Department-approved respiratory protection.
  • Maintains personal physical fitness consistent with Department standards and the physical demands of firefighting.
  • Performs all essential job functions in accordance with applicable NFPA 1001, NFPA 1500, and NFPA 1582 requirements.
  • Maintains all required certifications and qualifications in accordance with Department policies, applicable standards, and regulations.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • H.S diploma or equivalent required
  • Minimum of Tennessee Fire Commission Firefighter II Certification, or IFSAC / Pro Board Firefighter II Certification with eligibility for reciprocity within 90 days.
  • State of Tennessee EMT, AEMT, or Paramedic License; or holds a current National Registry Certification and has the ability to obtain reciprocity within 90 days
  • Current AHA BLS Certification
Additional Requirements:
  • Candidates will be required to submit to written testing, oral interview panel, job functionality testing (physical agility) and an NFPA 1582 medical physical prior to any final offers of employment
  • Valid driver's license.
  • Successful completion of a background investigation
Physical Requirements:
  • Requires climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, seeing, and repetitive motions.
  • Very Heavy Work:Exerts over 100 lbs. of force occasionally, over 50 lbs. frequently, and over 20 lbs. constantly to move objects.
  • Job Functionality Testing includes the following assessments. Candidates will have 10:20 to complete the series of 8 events. Additional information and practice dates/times will be sent following application.
