The City of Jefferson is currently accepting applications for Firefighter for a hiring roster for our Fire Department. We are looking for the best and brightest career-oriented individuals. This position is responsible for the protection of life and property by controlling and extinguishing fires, rescuing injured and trapped persons, rendering medical care, mitigating hazardous materials, and assisting other departments as needed. Although in this position, firefighting and rescue work are the most difficult and responsible areas of activity, a major portion of time is spent training, maintaining facilities and equipment, inspecting businesses and educating the public.
The starting annual compensation for firefighters is $51,465.80 (this amount includes guaranteed holiday pay for 11 holidays), ensuring a rewarding package for your dedication and service.
The testing process includes a written examination and a physical agility test.
Applicants may be exempt from the written examination by submitting a valid Firefighter I/II certification from the State of Missouri. Similarly, those with a CPAT certificate dated within one year of their application submission may be exempt from the physical agility test. Applicants must submit certificates as an attachment to the employment application.
Must have a valid Driver's License and the ability to obtain a Class B Missouri Driver's License with air brake endorsements within 12 months of hire.
Requires a high school diploma or equivalent and basic computer skills. Must be at least 18 years of age; possess a valid Missouri Emergency Medical Technician License (EMT-B or EMT-P); and hold valid State of Missouri Firefighter I & II Certifications.
Must be able to pass a NFPA 1582 compliant health physical and begin the series of required vaccinations before the candidate may begin employment.
Physical: Ability to use strength and stamina to work in a superheated environment while wearing up to 100 lbs. of full protection gear including self-contained breathing apparatus; work in extreme fluctuations in temperatures; strength to operate heavy tools and equipment up to 80 lbs. for up to 30 minutes; swim with endurance and proficiently; stoop, bend, and lift continually over time; strength and endurance to remove an unconscious adult from a hazardous situation. Must have the ability to remain comfortable in the water, move, and self-rescue while wearing a personal flotation device.
Mental: Ability to work with one or a large group of severely injured, maimed or dead persons; control stress and follow directions in a life threatening environment; work in confined spaces and at heights greater than 10 feet; enter dangerous areas and perform dangerous tasks; and awareness under pressure of changing fire or hazard conditions. Ability to communicate, understand and follow oral and written instructions; establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and work within the confines of a fire station for 24 hours or more. Firefighters work 48 hour shifts on a 48/96 rotation.
Applicants must live within 25 air miles of the City limits or 45-minute reporting time to Station 1 within 12 months of hire.
