Job summary

The City of Horseshoe Bay seeks a dedicated firefighter to join its department, performing fire suppression, EMS support, inspections, and education. The role emphasizes physical fitness, rapid response, and adherence to safety protocols within a structured municipal fire service.

Ideal candidates will hold Basic Firefighter Certification (TX) and EMT-Basic, with Hazardous Materials training and a TX Class-B driver license.

Qualifications

• Twelve months related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
• High school diploma or equivalent required.
• Basic Firefighter Certification through the Texas Commission on Fire Protection.
• Emergency Medical Technician-Basic Certification through the Texas State Department of Health Services.
• Specialized Class-B Exempt, Texas driver’s license.
• Hazardous Materials Operations Level training.
• Ability to meet continuing education requirements for recertifications and training standards/requirements of the Horseshoe Bay Fire Department.

Responsibilities

• Responds to fires, auto extrications, rescues, hazmat spills, EMS calls to protect lives and property; performs fire, rescue and EMS operations.
• Presents public education programs, fire prevention, and life safety presentations to citizens.
• Performs municipal fire and life safety inspections as directed.
• Drives and operates emergency equipment at scenes and maintains equipment/tools.
• Performs daily equipment checks and routine maintenance of vehicles and related equipment.
• Cleans and maintains fire apparatus, equipment, stations, and facilities.
• Participates in training programs and continuing education.
• Advances hose lines, hydrant connections, directs water/pressure streams, uses extinguishers and ventilates buildings.
• Operates rescue tools and performs searches in burning buildings; ventilates buildings by opening windows/holes.
• Prepares and maintains records, logs, and reports regarding alarms, inspections, medical emergencies, and fire prevention activities.
• Participates in drills and classes pertaining to medical services, fire suppression, rescue, hydraulics, and inspections.
• Responsible for maintenance of fire hydrants throughout the City.
• Assists in securing sites by directing traffic and setting up lighting and safety activities.
• Assists in investigating fires; collects and preserves evidence; secures fire scene.
• Maintains physical fitness as part of the role.

Responsibilities

• Responds to fires, auto extrications, rescues, hazardous materials spills, emergency medical calls, and other emergency incidents to protect lives and property. Performs fire, rescue, and EMS operations per Department procedures and as directed.
• Presents public education programs, fire prevention, and other life safety presentations to the citizens.
• Performs municipal fire and life safety inspections as directed.
• When assigned to, drives and operates emergency equipment at emergency scenes, and helps maintain the equipment and related tools.
• Helps perform daily equipment checks, and assists in routine maintenance of vehicles and related equipment.
• Cleans and maintains fire apparatus, equipment, fire stations, and facilities.
• Instructs and/or participates in training programs and complies with all required and necessary continuing education.
• Assists in advancing hose lines and making hydrant connections, lays and connects hose lines, directs water and pressure streams, uses chemical extinguishers, ventilates buildings, and rescues persons.
• Operates all types of bars, hooks, lines, forcible entry tools, and other rescue equipment.
• Performs searches and rescues inside burning buildings; ventilates burning buildings by opening windows and holes in roofs and floors.
• Prepares and maintains records, logs, and reports regarding alarms, inspections, medical emergencies, and fire prevention activities.
• Participates in drills and classes pertaining to medical services, fire suppression, rescue, street locations, hydraulics, and fire inspections.
• Responsible for maintenance and upkeep of fire hydrants throughout the City.
• Assists in securing sites by directing traffic, clearing public, clearing landing zones for helicopter landing; setting up lighting and related safety activities.
• Assists in the investigation of fires; collect and preserve evidence; secure fire scene.
• Participates in a physical fitness program to maintain physical conditioning.
• Performs other tasks and assignments as directed by the Fire Captain or other ranking officer.
• Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Training, Education and Experience Required:

Twelve months related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. High school diploma or equivalent required.

Preferred Training, Education and Experience:

One to two years related experience and/or training; or associate degree; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Other Requirements – Certificates/Licensures:

• At a minimum, ability to maintain a Basic Firefighter Certification through the Texas Commission on Fire Protection
• Ability to maintain a minimum of Emergency Medical Technician-Basic Certification through the Texas State Department of Health Services
• Minimum of a Specialized Class-B Exempt, Texas driver’s license
• Ability to maintain a minimum of an Operations Level of Hazardous Materials training per federal requirements
• Ability to meet all continuing education requirements for all re-certifications, and training standards/requirements of the Horseshoe Bay Fire Department

Ability to use strength and stamina to work in a superheated, hazardous environment while wearing up to 100 lbs. of full protection gear including a self-contained breathing apparatus; work in extreme fluctuations in temperature; strength to operate heavy tools and equipment up to 80 lbs. for up to 30 minutes; stoop, bend, and lift continually over time; and strength and endurance to remove an unconscious adult from a hazardous situation. Ability to swim with heavy gear and to perform water rescues. Occasionally, when suppressing fires at or near rooftops or several stories above ground, climbing/standing on a ladder.
