Job summary

City of Ardmore is seeking firefighters to respond to fires, medical emergencies, and hazardous situations. You will operate equipment, rescue occupants, and support paramedics when needed.

Requirements include a high school diploma or GED with preferred fire science training; candidates must meet physical demands and participate in ongoing training. An EMT bonus is offered for eligible applicants.

  • Perform routine station duties and equipment checks.

Job description

To respond to fire alarms, medical emergencies, hazardous materials, urban rescue and other calls to protect life and property; to participate in fire prevention and training; and to maintain assigned station and firefighting equipment.

**$500.00 Bonus for EMT**

Must be able to participate in the Oklahoma Fire Pension System (Age 18-45)

  • Respond to fire alarms with assigned company; extinguish structure, wildland, and auto fires; lay and connect hose; maintain pumping apparatus; hold nozzles and direct water streams; raise and climb ladders; ventilate burning structures; enter buildings to evacuate occupants.
  • Operate all types of fire operation and rescue equipment including portable fire extinguishers, pike poles, hand lines, smoke ejectors, salvage covers, forcible entry tools, aerial ladder equipment and emergency medical equipment.
  • Respond to emergency medical incidents; analyze patient needs and administer advance emergency medical until relieved by proper medical personnel.
  • Administer emergency medical; assist paramedics at medical emergencies; apply techniques for the control of bleeding; utilize immobilization techniques to stabilize patient.
  • Respond to a variety of general emergency rescue calls including auto accidents, gas system leaks and animals in distress.
  • Respond to hazardous materials incidents on an on-call basis and under emergency conditions;
  • Perform auto extrication and rescue.
  • Perform tests on water flow, sprinkler systems, fire alarms and elevator return systems; perform service tests of fire hose, hydrants, and ground ladders; certify smoke detectors.
  • Attend and participate in training; stay abreast of new innovations in the field of firefighting.
  • Clean apparatus and equipment at fire stations; check apparatus for functional readiness; perform general custodial duties as required.
  • Perform related duties and responsibilities as required.
Education and Experience:
  • Requires a High School Diploma or GED
  • specialized training in fire science, fire administration or a related field, preferred
Knowledge and Skills:
  • Principles, practices and procedures of modem firefighting; Operation of fire apparatus, equipment, tools, devices, facilities and their proper use; Uniform Fire Code and Uniform Building Code; Emergency medical, C.P.R. and other medical assistance techniques;
  • Layout of the City's water main system and street numbering system; Advanced life support and basic life support procedures and techniques; Human anatomy and body functions; Advanced rescue techniques and procedures; Hazardous Materials
  • Perform heavy lifting and physical maneuvering. Perform emergency medical treatment at fire sites; Demonstrate mechanical aptitude as required in the operation of firefighting equipment; Meet the emergency medical requirement as prescribed by the State of Oklahoma and to administer emergency medical; Demonstrate physical aptitude; Retain presence of mind in emergency situations; Understand and follow· oral and written directions promptly and accurately; Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing; Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work; Maintain physical condition to perform essential duties as specified by firefighter certification; Maintain physical condition appropriate to the performance of assigned duties and responsibilities which may include the following: Performing life threatening firefighting activities in an emergency situation Running, walking, crouching or crawling during emergency operations Moving equipment and injured/deceased persons; Climbing stairs/ladders; Performing life-saving and rescue procedures; Walking, standing or sitting for extended periods of time; Operating assigned equipment and vehicles.
  • Effectively deal with personal danger which may include exposure to: Fire encompassed surroundings; Dangerous persons; Dangerous animals; Hazards of emergency driving; Hazards associated with traffic control and working in and near traffic; Natural and man-made disasters
  • Maintain effective audio-visual discrimination and perception needed for: Making observations; Communicating with others; Reading and writing; Operating assigned equipment and vehicles.
  • Maintain mental capacity which allows the capability of: Exercising sound judgment and rational thinking under dangerous circumstances; Evaluating various options and alternatives and choose an appropriate and reasonable course of action; Demonstrating Intellectual capabilities during training and testing processes.
