Utah State Crime Lab is seeking a Forensic Scientist in the Firearms & Tool Marks Section to perform complex examinations of firearms and related evidence. The role includes handling ammunition, tool marks, and surface analyses to support investigations and legal proceedings.

The ideal candidate has a natural science degree, experience with NIBIN, and capabilities in presenting findings in reports and court testimony.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in a natural science (Biology, Chemistry, Biochemistry) or Forensic Science.

Responsibilities

• Perform examinations of firearms, ammunition, tools, tool marks, and related evidence.
• Examine clothing and surfaces for gunshot residues and powder patterns; determine muzzle-to-target distance.
• Restore obliterated serial numbers chemically where applicable.
• Determine projectile trajectories; reconstruct shooting events; assist investigators.
• Enter and search data in the National Integrated Ballistics Information Network (NIBIN).
• Design experiments related to case issues and present findings in reports and in court.
