Job summary

Colonial Williamsburg Foundation seeks a skilled life safety technician to test, inspect, troubleshoot, repair, maintain, and program existing and new electronic and water life safety systems across Foundation and Company properties. You will work on Fire Alarm, Fire Suppression, CCTV, access control, and basic communications systems, ensuring safety standards and documentation are up to date.

Responsibilities

  • Install and service life safety and property protection systems including Fire Alarm, Fire Suppression, CCTV, access control, and related components.
  • Maintain fire suppression systems (wet, dry, deluge) and associated valves and compressors.
  • Maintain electronic security systems (CCTV, access controls, intrusion) and related testing equipment.
  • Demonstrate proper use of tools and testing devices; follow documentation procedures.
  • Mentor junior technicians and participate in department training; work nights, weekends, or on-call as needed.

About the Position

Provides high skill and knowledge in the testing, inspecting, troubleshooting, repair, maintenance, and programming of existing, as well as new electronic and water life safety and property protection systems including, but not limited to Fire Alarm, Fire Suppression, Alarm Intrusion, CCTV, Access Control, Gate Control, Basic P/A and Sound, and Basic Phone/Cable/Data/Fiber/Modem Communication systems for both Colonial Williamsburg Foundation and Colonial Williamsburg Company properties.


Main Duties

Responsibilities include but are not limited to


  • Perform installation and service work on various types of life safety and property protection systems i.e. Fire Alarm Systems and their standard components such as Temperature Alerts, Aerotubing, Aspiration Detection, and Smoke Beams.

  • Maintain Fire Suppression Systems to include wet, dry and deluge systems and their components including associated valves and compressors.

  • Maintain Electronic Security Systems such as alarm intrusion including all components, CCTV, gate controls, lock/access controls, basic P/A and sound, basic phone/cable/data/fiber/modem communication and all applicable system components.

  • Responsible for demonstrating the proper use of related tools, equipment, and testing devices associated with the position.

  • Responsible for following proper documentation procedures and record associated information as required.

  • Exercise good communication skills (verbal and written) and work effectively with other internal trades teams, departmental personnel as well as contractors working on all Colonial Williamsburg properties.

  • Understand and adhere to all safety regulations, procedures and policies and effectively identify and communicate any safety issue/hazards.

  • Serve as mentor and assist in the training of junior level technicians. Participate in department and company-wide training as required.

  • May function as coordinator in absence of Master level Technician.

  • This position requires the ability to work nights, weekends or shift work as required based on business need and provide “on call” coverage 24 hours/day as required.


This is a non-exempt position, eligible to receive overtime in accordance with the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA). This position may be subject to overtime during high peak times, etc. as directed and approved by the supervisor.

Required Education and Experience


  • High school diploma or G.E.D. certificate required plus 4-8 years’ experience in application of various types of life safety and property protection systems.

  • This is a Journeyman level Technician

  • Good communication skills, both oral and written.

  • Must demonstrate proficiency in reading basic electronic or electrical schematics, blueprints, and shop drawings.

  • Demonstrated ability to lift and carry up to 75 pounds, work at heights above 30 feet on ladders, scaffolds, and bucket trucks.

  • Demonstrated ability and willingness to work any shift, including nights, weekends, holidays and emergency calls.

  • Participate in departments’ monthly in-house Safety Program.

  • Must possess a valid Commonwealth of Virginia driver’s license and have an acceptable driving record based on The Colonial Williamsburg Foundation’s criteria.

  • Must be able to provide a 5-year Motor Vehicle Record prior to employment

  • Must be at least 21 years of age

  • May not have more than 1 moving violation or at fault accident within 12 months

  • May not have more than 2 moving violations or at fault accidents within 36 months

  • May not have any serious motor vehicle violations including but not limited to excessive speeding, reckless driving, DUI/DWI, suspended or revoked license, etc.


Preferred Qualifications


  • Familiarity with Colonial Williamsburg Foundation properties.

  • Completion of National F/A and B/A classes/certification; and/or completion of National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) F/A and Sprinkler classes/certification; and/or completion of National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET) Fire Alarm Systems Levels I; and/or completion of NICET Fire Alarm Systems Inspection and Testing Levels I; and/or completion of NICET Water Based Systems Inspection and Testing Levels I.

Actual compensation will be determined based on factors such as the selected candidate’s skills, qualifications, experience, education, certifications, internal equity, and the specific requirements of the role. Range: $25.00 to $37.00 per hour
