Colorado Mountain College in Leadville, CO is hiring a part-time Fire Science Technician to support classroom and live-fire training. The role involves supervising and guiding students, delivering NFPA 1001 tasks, and working with faculty and teaching assistants in a live-fire environment.

The ideal candidate will hold multiple state certifications (Firefighter I/II, HazMat Ops/Tech, Fire Instructor I) and current EMT-B and BLS; 400 hours of active firefighting experience is preferred.

Qualifications

  • Colorado Division of Fire Prevention and Control certifications listed.
  • Current EMT-Basic and BLS for Healthcare Provider certifications.
  • Experience can substitute for a degree; 400 hours as Firefighter I preferred.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills; able to work with faculty and TA in live-fire training.
  • Bilingual English/Spanish preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Guide students in NFPA 1001 tasks such as donning/doffing PPE, ropes, knots, and hoisting tools.
  • Teach fire ground communication and operations, including SCBA use and emergency procedures.
  • Supervise live-fire training activities and ensure safety and compliance.
  • Coordinate with faculty and assist in classroom and lab sessions.
  • Perform equipment checks, maintenance, and safety briefings.

Job Description:

Primary Responsibility

Under the supervision of the Fire Science Technology Assistant Dean of Instruction and the Faculty, the Fire Science Technician will work in concert with the faculty to provide quality learning experiences for fire science students. This position is expected to engage with students in both a classroom setting and a laboratory setting including live fire. The Fire Science Technician will identify the individual learning needs of Fire Science students and teach students to increase their performance on various tasks_._

*This is a part-time position which is limited to 28 hours per CMC’s workweek. CMC’s workweek is Saturday through Friday.

Pre-requisites for Position (Qualifications Standards)

Education and experience sufficient to meet the rigors of the position. Examples may include Education or Training: The ideal candidate for this position will hold Colorado Division of Fire Prevention and Control Certifications in: Firefighter I, Firefighter II, Hazardous Material Operations & Technician, Fire and Emergency Services Instructor I, or Fire Instructor I. Additionally, this position will hold current certifications: Emergency Medical Technician – Basic, BLS for Healthcare Provider.

Experience in lieu of a degree is appropriate for this position. The idea candidate will have 400 hours serving as a Firefighter 1 with a Fire District or as a volunteer. Must possess communication and interpersonal skills; willingness to work with faculty and other teaching assistants in a live-fire training scenario; ability to conduct physical training with students.

Colorado Mountain College requires that employees perform their assigned duties within the State of Colorado. The hiring pay rate is $33.91 per hour. Benefits include retirement contribution, annual and sick time, mental health resources, and tuition benefit. CMC utilizes a wage progression compensation model that accounts for a candidate’s skill and experience. Although a hiring rate is listed, this will be set commensurate with the successful candidate’s qualifications and in compliance with the Equal Pay for Equal Work Act.

Minimum Qualifications:

Essential Duties

Fire Science Technicians are expected to be able guide students in the following NFPA 1001 tasks:

  • General Requirements: Donning & Doffing PPE, Ropes, Knots, and Hoisting Tools, Documentation, Standard, or Code

  • Fire Ground Communication: Initiate a Response, receive a Telephone Call, and Transmit on Radio. Fire Ground Operations: Don SCBA & Emergency Procedures

  • Respond on Apparatus, Scene Safety, Forcible Entry, Exit Hazardous Environments, Ground Ladders, Vehicle Fire, Class A Fire – Stacked or Piled

  • Search and Rescue, Horizontal Ventilation, Vertical Ventilation

  • Overhaul a Fire Scene, Salvage, Extinguishers, Scene Lighting, Control Utilities, Ground Fire, Ground, Above, or Below Level Fire.

  • Prevention, Preparedness, and Maintenance: Clean and Check Equipment and Clean and Inspect Hose

Supervision Received

This position reports to the Fire Science Technology Assistant Dean of Instruction, or his/her designee and works within the framework of responsibilities but may require guidance at times.

Supervisory Responsibility

Position has no supervisory responsibility.

Special Conditions of Employment

Successful completion of a background check including a motor vehicles records report required. Incumbents in this position will adhere to all safety and compliance policies of Colorado Mountain College while performing all duties assigned. This position may be required to transport students from a campus to the live fire training ground in Dotsero, CO with a CMC vehicle. This position is expected to work within the scheduling of Fire Science Technology courses that may meet on a 48/96 schedule.

Working Conditions

This position requires constant sitting, occasional walking, standing, and driving; occasional handling objects, pushing/pulling; frequent reaching with hands/arms, and use of finger movements; occasional lifting, carrying, pushing or pulling objects up to 50 lbs. Constant written and oralcommunication and the ability to reason and analyze and perform calculations occasionally. Work is performed using a computer and standard office equipment daily and driving a vehicle occasionally.
