Job summary

The City of South Lake Tahoe is seeking an entry-level Fire Safety Inspector to support proactive fire and life-safety inspections across hotels, commercial facilities, public venues, and construction sites. Under supervision, you will learn city policies and inspection procedures while engaging with owners, contractors, architects, and the public.

  • Education/Training: Completion of the twelfth grade.
  • Experience: One year of journey level trades or construction activity.
  • License/Certificate: CA or NV driver's license; Fire Prevention 1A/1B must be completed; Fire Prevention 1C/1D within two years; ICBO/ICC Building Inspector certification desirable.

Responsibilities

  • Inspect hotels, motels, commercial and industrial buildings, public facilities, special event venues, and construction projects to support compliance with fire, building, and life-safety codes.
  • Learn City policies and inspection procedures while working with property owners, contractors, architects, businesses, and the public.

Job description

The City of South Lake Tahoe is seeking a detail-oriented, customer-focused Fire Safety Inspector Ito help protect the community through proactive fire and life-safety inspections. This entry-level technical position conducts inspections of hotels, motels, commercial and industrial buildings, public facilities, special event venues, and construction projects to support compliance with applicable fire, building, and life-safety codes. Under general supervision, the incumbent will learn City policies and inspection procedures while working collaboratively with property owners, contractors, architects, businesses, and the public.

Experience with inspections or in related fields, such as code enforcement, fire prevention, building inspection, construction, or the skilled trades, is desirable. Knowledge of building construction methods, materials, tools, and safety practices is also desirable, as are relevant inspection coursework, certifications, or training. The ideal candidate will demonstrate strong communication, customer service, problem-solving, and recordkeeping skills, along with the ability to read and interpret construction plans and apply adopted codes and regulations.

Education and Experience Guidelines

Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:

Education/Training: Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade.

Experience: One year of experience in the journey level trades or as a contractor in a variety of building construction activities.

License or Certificate: Possession of a valid California or Nevada driver's license required. Successful completion of CA Fire Service Training and Education courses: Fire Prevention 1A and 1B must be completed/passed prior to completion of one year probationary period. Must successfully complete/pass CA Fire Service Training and Education courses Fire Prevention 1C and 1D within two years from date of hire to retain employment. Possession of an ICBO or ICC Building Inspector certification highly desirable.
