Job summary

WSP USA is seeking a Fire & Life Safety Engineering Intern for Summer 2027 in Boston, MA (also considering New York, Columbia, Arlington, Dallas, Houston). The 12-week program starts May 17, 2027, offering hands-on exposure to real projects under senior staff within the Developing Professionals Network.

You will assist with design, code research, calculations, and commissioning tasks while developing technical, social, and ethical skills under direct supervision.

Qualifications

• Actively enrolled in an accredited Fire Protection Engineering or related undergraduate program with anticipated graduation Aug 2027 or later.
• Must be 18+ years old and eligible to work in the United States at internship start.
• Demonstrated interest in Fire Protection & Life Safety and desire to grow with WSP.
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills for engineering and non-engineering audiences.
• Able to take direction from mentors and managers to execute projects.
• Basic proficiency with technical writing, office software, and common tools.
• Committed to workplace safety and adhering to company policies.
• Authorization to work in the United States at internship start.

Responsibilities

• Research building, life safety, and fire code requirements (ICC and NFPA).
• Assist design of fire protection and life safety systems (sprinklers, detection, alarms, smoke management, egress).
• Support fire engineering calculations from simple hand calcs to 3D modeling.
• Assist commissioning of fire alarm, suppression, smoke control, and life safety systems.
• Support review of architectural drawings for code compliance and document basis of design.
