Job Description: Fire Protection Engineer
As the Fire Protection Engineer, you will support the Fire Protection Group and Eastman in the design work on multi-discipline projects and support the preparation of comprehensive fire protection packages for successful installation and construction including fire suppression, fire alarm, and procurement. You’ll develop evaluations for new and/or existing fire protection systems, support the procurement and construction administration processes and travel to other Eastman sites, as necessary.
Responsibilities:
• Work as part of the Fire Protection Group to complete all design, specification and multi-discipline coordination aspects for fire protection packages for a variety of fire suppression systems, fire water supply infrastructure, voice evacuation fire alarm systems and releasing systems
• Support all design functions required to complete projects for successful construction
• Responsible for successful discipline project outcomes (cost, schedule and quality conformance)
• Provide deliverable quality checking and oversight
• Support the procurement process in fire protection equipment purchases
• Participate in the development and improvement of procedures and information management
• Interface with Project Managers and division representatives at various manufacturing sites
• Perform the construction administration, including coordination with field personnel to resolve design related installation issues and review subcontractor shop drawings and calculations, field inspections and testing of fire protection systems
• Perform to defined project metrics
• Evaluate and/or create fire protection calculations including, but not limited to hydraulic analysis of fire water supply and demand, battery calculations and voltage drop calculations
• Work with fire protection subcontractors on in design and installation of fire protection systems
• Prepare and present technical reports and presentations
• Build and maintain effective relationships within Eastman manufacturing divisions and manufacturing sites and contractors
• Perform other duties as assigned
Qualifications:
• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Fire Protection Engineering or related engineering discipline from an ABET-accredited university
• Minimum 3 years’ related experience (completion of Master’s degree in Fire Protection Engineering may be substituted for one year of experience)
• Experience with and understanding of NFPA codes and standards, International Building Code, International Fire Code, NFPA 70 NFPA 72 and Factory Mutual datasheets preferred
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills with strong analytical and problem-solving skills
• Working knowledge of appropriate design tools such as:
• Hydraulic fire protection calculation software (HASS, AutoSprink)
• CADD (2D and 3D)
• Excel, Word, and Power Point
• Experience with the following tools is preferred:
• Laser scans
• Bentley
• AVEVA
• Experience with special hazards and fire protection in an industrial setting preferred
• Ability to lead design efforts on multiple assignments of varying complexity
• Strong leadership and interpersonal skills for implementation of cross-functional process improvements
• Ability to mentor and develop lesser experienced team members
• Must work well in team and be a self-starter, capable of understanding issues and solving problems with minimal guidance
• The position requires an experienced and competent individual capable of successfully solving challenging problems requiring adaptation and modification of standard techniques, procedures or criteria
• NICET certification and Certified Fire Protection Specialist accreditation are strongly preferred
• Professional Engineer (P.E.) or Professional Fire Protection Engineerlicense preferred
