Job summary

City of Winston-Salem is seeking a Fire Inspector under immediate supervision to enforce state and local fire prevention codes and conduct related work. Qualifications

• Requires a high school diploma supplemented by fire science courses or related fields.
• General knowledge of state fire codes and local ordinances.
• Ability to recognize existing and potential fire hazards in various structures.
• Ability to proficiently use computer systems for fire inspections.

Responsibilities

• Inspect facilities, sites, and buildings for fire hazards and compliance with the North Carolina Fire Code and city ordinances.
• Answer and investigate complaints and report hazardous conditions and order corrections.
• Prepare and track inspection reports and issue permits as authorized.
• Issue citations and obtain summons for fire code violations.
• Establish and enforce fire lanes as authorized by city ordinance.
• Plan evacuation programs, evaluate drills, and discuss fire hazards.
• Conduct and assist with public fire and life safety education programs.
• Assist with investigation of fire/explosion incidents under guidance of investigators.
• Compile detailed reports and sketches describing observations and actions.
• Provide training to fire personnel on community risk reduction.
• Assist in budgeting and in assessing performance to improve safety and resiliency.
