Job summary

Forest Service position provides fire detection services to district fire suppression personnel. Duty stations are nationwide with non-telework and minimal travel. The job pays $19.52 per hour as a GS-5, is full-time but temporary, and requires living/working in remote locations as needed.

Availability spans multiple duty locations and includes the rest of the U.S. for seasonal fire seasons. Responsibilities include locating smoke, reporting to dispatch, monitoring weather, and promoting fire

Qualifications

• GS-05 level qualification required or equivalent specialized experience as described in the announcement.

Responsibilities

• Uses standard fire finders, compass, binoculars and maps to locate observed smoke and estimate fire size.
• Plots fire location and reports azimuth, distance, location and smoke characteristics by radio.
• Monitors area for changes and reports to dispatch; interprets weather data for fire behavior.
• Maintains lookout station grounds, operates radio center, and relays weather and fire information.
• Promotes fire prevention laws and conducts lookout duties, fire reporting and public safety outreach.
