The City of Hanahan Fire Department is accepting applications from qualified internal and external candidates for a tiered position supporting the Department's fire prevention, community risk reduction, fire investigation, inspection, code enforcement, and public fire and life safety education functions.
Candidates who do not possess every preferred credential at the time of appointment may be considered when they meet the minimum qualifications and can successfully complete the required professional development milestones within the established timeframes.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Conduct fire and life safety inspections of commercial and other regulated occupancies.
- Identify fire and life safety hazards, document code violations, and conduct follow-up inspections to verify compliance.
- Interpret and apply applicable fire codes, ordinances, standards, and department policies.
- Assist with or conduct fire origin and cause investigations consistent with Department authority and training.
- Maintain accurate inspection, investigation, enforcement, and activity records.
- Provide fire and life safety education to businesses, schools, community organizations, and the public.
- Participate in community risk reduction initiatives and public outreach programs.
- Review applicable construction, fire protection, and life safety documentation based on assigned authority and qualifications.
- Coordinate professionally with building officials, contractors, business owners, property managers, and other governmental agencies.
- Assist with fire protection system acceptance testing and related inspections as authorized.
- Perform other fire prevention, investigation, inspection, education, and administrative duties as assigned.
- Candidates must also demonstrate effective verbal and written communication, professional judgment, accurate recordkeeping, independent work habits, professional interaction with the public, and the ability to interpret technical fire and life safety information.

Educational Experience and Qualifications
- ICS-100

- Hazardous Materials Operations
- Current CPR certification
- Minimum of 40 hours of documented training related to fire investigation, fire inspection/code enforcement, and public fire and life safety education.
- Placement will be based upon the candidate's qualifications at the time of appointment. The Department may appoint a candidate directly to Fire Inspector II or Fire Marshal when the candidate possesses the appropriate combination of training, certifications, experience, and demonstrated competencies.
Tiered Appointment and Professional Development
TIER I - FIRE INSPECTOR I - Preferred at Appointment / Required Within 6 Months
Salary range $49,040.87 - $56,052.38 (Depending on Qualifications)
- All minimum qualifications listed above.
- South Carolina Resident State Fire Marshal certification/registration, as applicable.
- A candidate meeting the minimum qualifications may be appointed before completing the Tier I credentials, provided the required credentials are obtained within six months of appointment.
TIER II - FIRE INSPECTOR II - Preferred at Appointment / Required Within 12 Months
Salary range $52,215.63 - $59,681.04 (Depending on Qualifications)
- South Carolina Fire Academy Fire and Life Safety Educator I.
- IAAI-FIT® - Fire Investigation Technician, or Department-approved equivalent meeting the intent of the qualification.
- These credentials establish advanced competency across inspection, public fire and life safety education, and fire investigation responsibilities.
TIER III - FIRE MARSHAL - Advanced Appointment Level / Fire Plans Examiner Within 24 Months
Salary range $54,822.53 - $62,660.66 (Depending on Qualifications)
- All Fire Inspector I and Fire Inspector II qualifications.
- Demonstrated competency in fire and life safety code enforcement, inspections, investigations, community risk reduction, public education, report writing, code interpretation, program management, interagency coordination, and leadership.
- International Code Council (ICC) Fire Plans Examiner - preferred at appointment and required within 24 months if not already held.
- The Fire Marshal provides leadership, coordination, and oversight of the Department's fire prevention, inspection, investigation, plans review, code enforcement, and community risk reduction functions.
Selection and Placement
- This recruitment is open to both current City of Hanahan employees and qualified external applicants. Candidates will be evaluated based upon the totality of their education, fire service experience, prevention experience, inspection and investigation experience, certifications, training, code knowledge, communication skills, professional judgment, leadership ability, and demonstrated ability to successfully perform the duties of the position.
- Possession of preferred certifications does not guarantee appointment at a particular tier. Final appointment as Fire Inspector I, Fire Inspector II, or Fire Marshal will be determined by the City of Hanahan based upon the candidate's qualifications, experience, organizational needs, and applicable City classification and compensation requirements.
Physical Requirements and Working Environment
- This position is based upon a 40-hour workweek. The normal schedule will generally consist of weekday business hours; however, the schedule may be varied to meet operational, inspection, investigation, training, and community needs.
- Fire and life safety inspections and follow-up inspections.
- After-hours inspections or fire scene investigations.
- Public education programs and community events.
- Meetings, training, and special assignments.
- Emergency incidents and other Department needs.
- Some evenings, weekends, holidays, and after-hours work may be required. The employee must be able to adjust the work schedule when necessary to meet Department and community
