Purpose Of Classification

The purpose of this classification is to perform specialized work driving and operating heavy duty and/or specialized motorized vehicles for fire suppression, emergency medical treatment, or other fire department operations.

Classification Specification

Distinguishing Characteristics

This is a single level classification.

Essential Functions

• Lead and coordinate emergency activities of assigned crew or co‑workers: confers with supervisor for direction, organizes tasks, monitors progress, inspects completed work, assists with complex situations, provides technical expertise, trains and instructs co‑workers, reports employee problems, provides input on disciplinary action and performance evaluations, and serves as a company officer when the captain is absent.
• Drive, operate, and monitor fire and emergency vehicles: determine best route, perform safe driving in all weather, transport crew and equipment, and position apparatus and equipment for optimal use.
• Maintain knowledge of water hydraulics, water supply systems, and pump operations: perform hydraulic calculations, ensure proper pressure and flow, and manage pump and tank capacity during fireground operations.
• Perform general maintenance of vehicles, apparatus, equipment, and tools: inspect and test equipment, replace fluids and greases, replace parts, wash and clean equipment, monitor operations, and report faulty equipment.
• Perform firefighting duties as needed: suppress, control, and extinguish fires; search, rescue, extricate victims; assist individuals from burning structures; establish openings; ventilate smoke; administer emergency medical treatment; salvage and cleanup; and exercise control of emergency situations.
• Maintain readiness and preparation for emergency response: check and maintain equipment and supplies, reload apparatus, prepare for subsequent emergencies, and ensure emergency medical service equipment is stocked and operational.
• Participate in fire prevention, pre‑fire planning, and education activities: conduct safety programs, apparatus displays, tours, and community events.
• Perform maintenance tasks for buildings and quarters: clean quarters, perform grounds maintenance, and report repair needs.
• Respond to non‑emergency calls: lift assists, ambulance assistance, welfare checks, vitals checks, investigating disconnected 911 calls, clearing trees, checking power lines, investigating gas or water leaks, assisting with alarm system issues, and providing medical stand‑by at community functions.
• Operate and maintain specialized firefighting equipment and supplies: personal protective equipment, extrication tools, medical equipment, suppression equipment, technical rescue and hazmat gear, and other tools.
• Maintain awareness of applicable laws, regulations, and new technologies: participate in training, keep certifications current, and stay informed of advances in firefighting and emergency medical treatment.
• Communicate with supervisors, city employees, the public, law enforcement, health professionals, and external agencies to coordinate work activities and resolve problems.
• Process documentation: prepare, review, and forward forms, reports, shift changes, incident reports, maintenance requests, road closure reports, after‑action reports, pre‑plans, and other documentation; maintain computerized and/or hard‑copy records.
• Operate a business‑issued computer and general office equipment to enter and retrieve data.

Minimum Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED required.
• Vocational or technical training in firefighting or a related field.
• Three years of experience in firefighting and emergency medical services.
• Or equivalent combination of education, training, and experience providing the requisite knowledge and skills.

• Valid South Carolina Class E Non‑Commercial Driver’s License.
• Firefighter certification.
• Emergency Medical Responder certification.
• Technical Rescuer certification.
• Car Seat Technician certification.
• Incident Command System 100/200 and 700/800 certifications.
• Emergency Vehicle and Pumps Operator/Driver certification.
• Aerials Driver/Operator certification.
• Fire Officer certification.
• Additional certifications may be required as deemed necessary.
